problems with Vista

My husband and I recently purchased a new computer from Gateway.
Unfortunetly we sent it back in less than 24 hours. It seems that while
getting on the internet the computer made updates (Mcafee, windows explorer
etc). In doing so our computer totally crashed. We called Gateway and they
explained to us that everytime you log onto the internet and your computer
makes any kind of updates this will cause your computer to crash. The only
way to fix the problem is to constatnly re-load Vista onto your computer
everytime it crashes. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Apparently
my husband and I are not the only consumers of new computers that have run
into this problem. I find it very upsetting that Microsoft and Gateway (and
Dell) knew of this problem but continued to make sales of new computers. So
what are we to do with no fix for this problem?

Buy a computer from anywhere else but Gateway. They're bullshitting
you.

Sounds like a load of BS to me. I have a DeLL and know several people with
these systems and jhave VISTA and they are having NO issues. Take the false
propaganda elsewhere, or to FOX news. They seems to like false news there.

This is complete rubbish - they were taking you for a ride.

Don't use Gateway again. You can buy great PCs from a number of places
these days, including PC World and "one man band" outfits on the outskirts
of most towns. It's certainly helpful if you can look the supplier in the
eye when asking for technical support!

With all due respect, Bean, I think you must have misheard or misinterpreted
what the person from Gateway said. Or else the person you spoke to is an
idiot.

Good thing you sent the machine back.

I've never heard of such a thing. If you are on-line and you have
auto-update turned on and Microsoft has Vista updates available, you will be
updated. Having to "re-install" the OS everytime your PC crashes is
ridiculous since it will just have to go out and get the updates all over
again. Are you sure that it was really Gateway support you were talking to?
I myself am running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS Gen3, 3.4GHz P4 with no
such "crashing problems" and have gone through several updates from
Microsoft.

Mr. Harris,
I object to your injection of your (loathsome) political views into a
computer discussion group. Please post these type of comments in a more
appropriate forum such as MoveOn.org or similar forum for such screed. Also,
you might check your spelling before submitting your post.

Must admit reinstalling the OS is not on. However, I'm having a lot of
problems with updates. Everytime it updates the side bar goes haywire and a
lot of the programs such as media player will not run. I have to do a system
restore to get thing running OK.

What is your PC type? And are we talking Vista updates or other program
updates? I do have a couple of problems with trying to update my Quicken
2007 to the latest version, but other than that, I haven't noticed any other
problems. If you have other programs installed that auto-update then there
might be some issues if you don't have them set as run as administrator.

Also, despite John C Harris's verbage, I agree with his statement. Having a
computer company support agent telling someone that they have to re-install
their OS everytime there is an update is so far out there that it really
isn't believable and it is very possible Bean is pulling our collective
legs.

Never said anything about my political views, just that FOX NEWS is full of
misleading statements. You ASSUMED because I don't like FOX NEWS that I must
like MoveOn.org (another site full of BS by the way).

Now why aren't you fighting for our country like I did for ten years? :-)

I have purchased a brand new HP with VISTA and have had no problems what so
ever with it downloading updates and working the way that it should be.

It's brand new - 3.4 Dual core, 2Gig RAM, etc. with Vista Home premium. I've
only had it a week or two and I'm gradually testing it out. It's the windows
updates that seem to cause the problem as McAfee updates OK each time.
I'm wondering whether the McAfee is somehow blocking the updates although it
doesn't show anything. It's supposed to be the Vista compatible version. I
might try closing McAfee after downloading but before installing the updates
and see if it makes any difference.

Dump McAfee.. don't think about Norton.. get NOD32 if you are ok about
paying, or AVG Free if you are not..

Bean, I don't think that they meant updates for Vista. Are you sure it isn't
just software? When I first got Vista (Dell, awesome box) I installed McAfee
Enterprise 8.0i and my Vista bluescreened, but I knew exactly what it was
that did it. It appears it will be some time before Vista's compatibility is
100% with everything. You shouldn't have sent it back. You should have called
some one you know who knows about PCs. That would have helped.
