Problems with User Accounts

Can anyone help with this problem:

I have two user accounts on my PC which is running Windows XP professional.
If I have IE or Windows explorer or control panel running and my wife
switches to her account, she cannot access any of these applications (there
may be others). She gets the error message:

Runtime Error!

Program C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.

(this is for IE but she gets a similar message when trying to access the
other applications).

I get these errors if she has one of the applications running.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

Thankyou.

In Lewis Kranat had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Disable fast user switching and log off completely so that the other person
can log in to use the PC.

(Really, that's the best method and the few seconds longer that it takes
won't really bother anything.)

I am also encountering the same problem that Lewis K and others have reported.
Galen's fix is not very satisfactory as it defeats the added functionality
that WIN XP is designed to provide, namely multiple sessions running at the
same time by a number of users.

Others have suggested the problem may be due to antivirus applications
running on top of WIN XP. I deinstalled mine (McAfee), rebooted and still
got the same runtime error message. So that indicates strongly to me that
the problem is within the MS world rather than being attributable to a third
party.

One other suggestion I received was to disable IE6 and replace it with the
Firefox browser. If I don't get a useful response for MS, I will be left
with no option but to go to Firefox which is freeware.

I think MS owes us all an explanation and a robust fix. I have sent MS
emails today on this issue with one directed to their IE6 shop and t'other to
their WIN XP shop.

I recently began experiencing this exact problem. I have been using XP Pro with multiple users simultaneously logged in and McAffee for well over a year and never had a problem with IE before. My wife, kids and I switch users often throughout the day so disabling fast switching is not an option.

I'd really like to find a solution to this as well.

Has anyone gotten a response from MS on this issue yet?? It's EXTREMELY annoying. Why can't the gods of MS use better Q/C people to keep bugs like these out? I really think they're smokin some good stuff, but I will pay big $$$$ if someone comes thru with the solution to this little bugger! Peace brothers & sisters!

My wife's session works fine, but my session won't run any .exe, what's up with that???

My only recourse is to press ctrl-alt-delete and navigate to the users tab and manually logoff my wife's session. WEAK!!!!!

c'mon guys let's start a revolt! MS Q/C needs to respond and now!

Fixed it

In addition to no being able to run IE as noted in my last post, I also was having problems with it hanging the UI and the only way I could log out was to CTRL+ALT+DEL to the task manager and use the shut down menu.

I finally figured out that it all started happening around the time I installed the Beta of MS Windows Defender. Sure enough, I uninstalled it and VIOLA! good as new.

Cool dude, but I don't have the Beta of MS Windows Defender installed....so now what? this sucks?

I work at Microsoft and hit this problem myself. For me, the problem was not caused by Microsoft code but rather by McAfee's Anti-Phishing plug-in.

Here's the weblink I found that solved this problem for me:

Hopefully this helps others out as well.
