Problems with USB on Windows 2000 server

I have two different computers that are having the
same problem with USB devices. I have tried several
differnet devices and drivers on each system with the same
results. In the device manager the device shows a "!" and
says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code
28)". If I try to reinstall the drivers it completes but
has this error. "The installation failed because of a
function driver was not specified for this device
instance." The driver that they find is in
C:\winnt\inf\usb.inf.
The one server is a Proliant ML310 and the other is a
custom built computer that isn't really a server, per
say. The Proliant server has a SCSI raid controler with 3
36 gig harddrives configured as raid 5. The onboard SCSI
controler only has a 12/24 gig DDS3 tape drive. The
devices that I'm trying to install on this server are an
APC SmartUps and a Buslink 120 gig external hard drive.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Tom,

I'm having similar problems...

I've been unable to get my web cam to work with my IBM T21
ThinkPad. The os, Windows 2000 Professional, is supposed
to be compatible and all speed requirements are met. The
cam, a LogiTech ProCam for notebooks, is plugged in to an
internal USB port that does work when my network walkman
is connected. When the walkman is stopped and the web cam
is connected to the sole USB port, the cam is recognized
in the device manager with a yellow circle and black
exclamation point inside. The only other video device that
I use is a Nokia digital camera, which is solely connected
through an IR port. I have removed that Nokia software to
determine if there was a conflict, but the LogiTech cam's
status did not change. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
LogiTech software numerous times to rule out any
corruption. All antivirus and firewall software is turned
off each time that I attempt to make the web cam
connection. I've also debugged and defragged. I have
worked with IBM and LogiTech tech support and we have
ruled out the idea that the supplied LogiTech driver was
not correct. Each time I delete the cam from the device
manager and attempt to reconnect, it shows up as an
unknown device. Even attempts to manually install the
driver have not enable the cam to work. I've downloaded
current versions of all software from IBM, LogiTech and
Microsoft Windows. There seems to be a discrepancy as to
whether there is a separate driver that operates the USB
port. I've heard yes and I've heard no. A LogiTech
representative said that the issue could be a power issue
and that there could be a drain on the IRQ that will not
enable the camera to work. I noticed that a total of eight
other devices (including my modem and a couple of PCI
cards) are set at IRQ 9. I attempted to determine if I
should make a change, but neither IBM nor LogiTech could
assist in this matter since it's a Windows issue. My
understanding is that Microsoft recommends that no IRQ
have more than four devices assigned to it. My walkman,
when hooked up to the USB port, has locked up a few times
and produced an error message saying that there was not
enough power available. As I understand it, either
updating the USB driver (if it exists) or reassigning the
IRQ appear to be the only remedies I still have available.
Once these are resolved, my efforts will be exhausted. Can
you help?

Chris

Since im looking for a solution that is exactly the same i
will elaborate with my eksperiences.

I run Win2K-pro on a noname mashine
I get the problem trying to use a mass-storage device
(compact flash)
My USB HW works fine with my game voice and mouse.
I have seen the same problem on a no name mashine running
Win-ME
My flash card and reader works fine on other mashines.

How exactly do you get the overview of your used IRQ's

Best regards, with hope that some genius gives us all the
solution.

Hi, I have the same problem with the installation of an Olympus Digital Camera. In the device manager the device shows a "!" and says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)". If I try to reinstall the drivers it eventually completes after saying it cannot find a few files e.g. Olpubkcr.sys. I find the files and it completes but has this error. "The installation failed because of a function driver was not specified for this device instance."

A friend installed the same camera and it plugged and played he uses XP. I have gone through the windows updates and tried Olympus but no good. They say it is a windows problem.

I hope we get a solution! Regards MichaelK
