Hello,

I've had a problem with my USB scanner for a long time : i
installed/uninstalled it a high number of times, and now, i always get the
"Unplug/eject hardware" icon showing up in my system tray. However, if i go
in the "Hardware manager", my scanner is normally installed. I can use my
scanner normally almost all the time, except if i want to use a third-party
scanning application (Vuescan).
yesterday, i reproduced the same problem, with a USB DSL modem, on another
PC, cause i installed/uninstalled it a bunch of times.
Since i happened both times with USB devices, i figured this bug relates
only to USB device, but i may be wrong.

How can i resolve that problem?

thanks.

this happened to you before? what did you do to solve the problem?
i know its a win2k question, but i've posted the question in all win2k
newsgroups, in two languages, and i got no reply....

thanks

Erm, it was a while ago, but I think my device had been installed several
times (all with the same entry in device manager). Some were actually hidden
devices. I think what I did in the end was to uninstall every entry I could
find relating to the device (hidden and un-) and then installed it.
Incidentally I shut down rather than reboot when installing and
uninstalling, because it really does make a difference in the long run.
Another thing is that my machine at least installs the device more than once
if a differnt USB port is used by the device. So if you have 4 USB ports,
over a period of unplugging it and reconnecting it to a different one you
could end up installing it 4 times! I don't know what the problem with 2k
is - 98se and me don't have it that I've noticed.

Hope some of that makes sense and helps.
