Alright I have tryed everything under the sun to try and
fix a problem I have encountered, I have two computers,
one desktop, one laptop, that will not resolve host names
internaly, I have a computer named "OCPS" its a domain
controler, but nither of the two computers can see this
server unless I install the novell NETBIOS and then it can
see the server, but I'm wanting to keep the network
stricktly TCP/IP. Both systems are using windows XP Pro,
and I have done a repair on one of them hoping it would
reset the networking componets and magicly make it resolve
hosts.... errrggggg any ideas?

Are the clients set to obtain an IP from the server automatically? Is the
Firewall turned off on the XP's?

Marina

For XP the first thing to check is that the ICF built in firewall is disabled.
Another thing to check is that all the computers have netbios over tcp/ip
enabled, which by default they should unless it was deliberately disabled. You
can check the tcp/ip/advanced/wins properties to check that. It may also help to
run netdiag on at least one of the computers looking for any pertinent failed
tests. If these computers are domain members, they need to be configured to
point to the domain controller only as their dns server in tcp/ip
properties. --- Steve

Can you successfully "ping" the IP address
of your server from either computer?

here is my responce to all of the posts:
Firewall: Disabled.
I can ping any computer using its IP, but not its name.
I am using a DHCP and it is handing out good ip addresses.
The DNS is pointing to the server and it's using it to
resolve webpages.
WINs are pointing to my server as well.
I did not disable the netbios over TCP/IP option.
I am trying to avoid using the novell set of units,
becuase it will work sorta with them installed, but
latency is bad.
I'm about to format the computer in hopes it resolves the
issues, but if any one has any futher ideas based on this
information please reply.
