Problem: One of the two client PCs on my home network has
ceased to display the internet connection icon in the
taskbar (XP Home Edition)when connected to the shared
internet connection.

This PC has never shown the internet connection under the
Control Panel/Internet Connections page; what this means
is that I now have no way of disconnecting my shared dial-
up connection from this PC.

Any help appreciated

To get the Internet Gateway icon to appear in the Network Connections
folder:

1. Make sure that the "SSDP Discovery Service" is running:

a. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
b. Double click Services and Applications.
c. Double click Services.
d. Double click "SSDP Discovery Service". If the Service status is
Stopped, click Start.
e. If the Startup type is Disabled, set it to Manual.

2. If the computer has XP Service Pack 1 installed, make sure that the
"Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control
Client" networking service is installed:

a. Click Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
b. Click "Add/Remove Windows Components".
c. Scroll down the list of components and double click "Networking
Services".
d. If there's a box for "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and
Control Client", put a check mark in it.

You might need to reboot or to disable and then enable the network
connection to make changes take effect.
