Problems with "restore CD"

I have a T2080 from e-machines with Windows XP. My restore CD does not work
properly. This is what happened:

Recently, my screen turned blue with gibberish everywhere. I tried doing a
"safe mode" so that I could get into Windows, and look into this further. I
was given several choices ... safe mode ... restore to previous setting and
so forth. Each of these options would load Windows just fine, but a few
seconds later I would get a message that indicated some major corruption. I
don't remember what action it suggested I'd take, but I was unable to do
ANYTHING since I could not get a prompt. Ever. This is when I decided to
use the restore CD.

Now Windows is up and running, but I get the following problems:

(1) I am trying to load my wireless internet software, but every time I
select "setup" nothing happens. As if it can't read from that drive. Even
though the same drive was used successfully for the restore CD.

(2) I tried using Media Player, just for kicks. It tells me that there are
files missing, and it can't operate it.

(3) The computer recognizes the presence of a peripheral, and it tries to
load the software, but at some point it tells me that it can't do that
because a file is missing. (I don't remember which.)

(4) Some of the original applications, that presumably should be loaded
through the restore CD, are simply not there.

It looks like the restore CD is not doing its job, or I have a bigger
problem that is beyond the ability of the restore CD to fix. My computer is
essentially inoperable.

Can you help?

Thanks.

You might have a corrupt hard drive. Try this: open My Computer, click on
C:, go to File -> Properties, click the Tools tab, and then click Check Now.
Select the "scan for bad sectors" feature. This will scan your hard drive
for problems. If any come up, I would suggest replacing the hard drive as
they are not that expensive and a bad one may not be stable even if you
attempt to isolate the bad sectors.

If you end up needing to replace the hard drive, you will probably be able
to use the restore CD afterwards to get everything up and running since a
new hard drive is completely blank.

Hope this helps!

Scott - thanks. I will try that.

If any bad sectors come up ... and I do decide to keep the hard drive,
exactly how would I isolate the bad sectors?

If I replace the hard drive NOTHING needs to be done? Just run the restore
CD? I am not very good at this, but don't have to do some "BIOS stuff"? I
vaguely remember that when I added a drive, years ago, to another computer,
something outside the operating system needed to be done.
