Problems with Outlook XP or Exchange 2000 hanging/crashing

We have experiencing the following problem with increasing frequency over the
last 3 weeks.

The problem is that Outlook freezes or hangs. This usually happens if the
user uses another application for 5-10 minutes and then returns to Outlook.
It also happens if the screensaver has come on and the user returns to the PC
and wakes it up.

More recently it has been affecting some users whilst they are drafting
e-mail and then send their messages (and then Outlook hangs).

The workaround is to shut the hanging application down by using the top
right X, or right mouse clicking the Outlook button in the taskbar.
Occasionally this doesn't work and Task Manager has to be used to shut the
non-responding application down.

On restart, Outlook attempts to report the problem to Microsoft. I don't
have the error report details but will post the next time it happens.

We don't know if the problem is Exchange-based or Outlook-based and seems to
affect about 75-80% of users.

We are using Outlook XP SP3 clients with Exchange 2000 SP3 enterprise edition.

Any ideas? Have there been any patches to Exchange or Outlook in the last
month or so that might have caused this?

Any HP hardware? Scanner, printer, etc.?

No. Desktops are Dell Optiplexes GX260, 270s, 280 and 620s. The Exchange
server is a Dell PwerEdge 2650.

Are you running antivirus on the desktop and is it scanning incoming/outgoing
email? You didn't mention the O/S, if it's XP with SP-2 are you running the
Windows Firewall as well as running a firewall and/or security software on
the desktop and on your network? Make sure that Outlook is allowed on the
Windows firewall, or disable the firewall if the network is firewalled.

We're running McAfee virusScan which scans on access.
We're on Windows XP SP2 on the desktops, and Win 2000 SP3 on the Exchange
server. The Windows firewall has been disabled on desktops becuase we're
sitting behind ISA Server.

The following is the error signature that the hang/crash is generating:

szAppName: OUTLOOK.EXE szAppVer: 10.0.6626.0 szModName: hungapp
szModVer: 0.0.0.0 offset: 00000000

One avenue we are investigating is whether it is a global cataloguing problem.

In the application event viewer, can you check for errors and provide the
Event ID and source please?

Event ID = 1002
Source = Application Hang

HTH.

Is there a matching Event ID 1001 to go with this? What is the source for
that, if there is? This matching event should display information about the
specific error that occurred.

Also, are you running any 3rd party toolbars? Are you running WinFax Pro?
Are you using Terminal Server?

There's no matching Event ID 1001 to go with it. There are 1015 and 1003
though (both EvntAgnt sources).

Are you using Terminal Server?

Additional Outlook toolbars are Docosoft (a document imaging system), Adobe
Acrobat, Enterprise Vault (email archiving) and McAfee on-demand virus
scanning. All users have these.

Not running WinFax Pro or Terminal Server.

Do HP printers have issues? We are having a problem with a network HP 2600n
printer causing Outlook 2003 to close when it trys to print to it. No other
program has this problem (e.g. word, excel, quickbooks, IE). If we install
the printer driver directly on the client machine, Outlook works fine, but we
lose all network advantages.

This may need to go into a separate thread, but I was curious to your
response about HP printers.

Did anyone get a resolution to this? We are having similar problems. We also
use HP printers...
