I e-mailed Echo and they suggested I post the e-mail here
as well, so here goes

Dear Echo:

Thanks for the psot on the newsgroup, however, I'm still
a bit lost. I'm
running XP on just my laptop. I'm not hooked up to any
network.

I saw a blurb that says - Also know that PPT's Org Chart
sometimes has
difficulties with the permissions under Win2000, NT and
XP and throws a
similar error.

I clicked the link below it but I couldn't see anything
about XP, also as
far as I know I haven't installed service pack 2 or 3.

Any other suggestions?

I searched and found your original post. Together with this post, the story
is confusing, so can we clarify a few things first? What version of
PowerPoint are you running? You can open PowerPoint and go to Help > About
PowerPoint and it will tell you at the top of the box that appears. Also
let us know what service pack it lists.

Similarly, what version of Windows are you running? You can go to My
Computer, click on Help > About Windows and it will tell you the version and
the Service Pack if any.

With that information maybe we can guide you through the troubleshooting
process.

Here's the answers to the ?'s you asked.
Windows:
Windows XP Home Edition - Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp
2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 1

PowerPoint
2000 SR1 (9.0.3821)

Thanks for the additional information.

Since you're using Windows XP Home and aren't on a network, I doubt if the
information about permissions is relevant.

After re-reading our FAQ about this error and comparing to your version of
Windows and Office, I can see why you're a bit confused. There are so many
things that can cause this, it's difficult to find the right combination on
that page! Plus, I suspect I need to type up some updated information for
the PPT FAQ page.

Anyway, I'm betting you're running Norton Antivirus (NAV). I know our page
specifies Office 2000 SP3, and I see below that you actually have SR1
installed, but I think this is probably still the problem.

So. If you would, try disabling the NAV Office Plug-In. Below are
instructions on how to do that. (Also, just so you don't have to worry about
virus protection, here's some info from MS -- "When the Norton AntiVirus
plug-in is disabled, the Norton AntiVirus for Microsoft Office plug-in does
not scan documents when you open the documents. Even if the Norton AntiVirus
for Office plug-in is disabled, the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect feature
still provides ongoing protection by scanning any file that you run,
download, open, create, or delete.")

Norton AntiVirus includes an option called the "Office Plug-in" and this
option, if activated, can cause many problems with Office installation and
operation. You'll want to disable it.

Disabling NAV doesn't disable the plug-in; In NAV go to Options. In the
Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

Some NAV versions (CE for example) don't include the Office Plug-In, but a
previously installed version of Norton AV may have left the Office Plug-In
DLL installed, registered and active.

Use Windows Explorer to search for: officeav.dll
If you find it, click Start, click Run and type this:
regsvr32 /u "\officeav.dll"
then click OK

I think that will do the trick. Sorry the FAQ wasn't as up-to-date as it
should be.

Echo,

I've updated it with some of your info. Thanks ...

Thanks for the info but I'm not using Norton Anti-virus -
I use AVG.

So try disabling it, or at least the macro virus scan portion of the deal.
At least temporarily, as a test.

AVG Control Center, Resident Shield tab, remove check next to "Macro viruses"

Steve:
Thanks for the suggestion.
I disabled the macro virus portion, and tried again.
I still get the same error message.

If none of the other suggestions, including Detect and Repair didn't help, you
might try uninstalling then reinstalling Office, assuming you have the original
CD
