Problems with opening and closing programs and My Documents

I regularly run anti-virus checks, spybot, disk clean up and adaware but I
find that programs such as Office 2007 take about 3 minutes to open. If I
want a document in Word I have to wait for the program to open but it only
opens the frame. I then have to close it and open it again in order for the
document to appear. Programs often resist closing, e.g.Office 2007 and IE8.
It also takes some while to save an image from the website - the whole thing
just seems to come to a full stop for a while. I have only used about 20% of
my HD. Is there any way to fix this? It's really frustrating as it slows my
work up all the time.

Many thanks.

Processor type/speed/# of cores...
Memory/RAM amount? (Is it shared with your video card, or does your video
card have its own memory?)
How much memory does your video card have?
Do you have the latest versions of your hardware drivers installed from
their respective vendors?
If you uninstall IE8 and revert to IE7 - does that speed things up?
How much memory are you using after booting and logging in, but before doing
anything else?

What is the CPU and how much RAM does the computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on ther Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Many thanks. Sorry - I don't know how to find this information out. I have
uninstalled IE8 but it has made no difference.

Many thanks. T= 625956, L= 1276304, P= 824532. These don't mean anything to
me. Clicking on My Computer does not provide this information. Where else
could I find it?

Thus why we need this information - your slow machine could be lack of
resources necessary to do what you are trying to do...

Get Belarc Advisor (free) and run it. It iwll tell you many useful things
(I suggest printing it for yourself and storing it with you CD/DVDs and
product keys/serial numbers - safely tucked away.) Do *not* post everything
it tells you here; However...

http://belarc.com/free_download.html

.... things like the information under the following headers/sections would
be fine:

Operating System
System Model
Processor
Main Circuit Board
Drives
Memory Modules
Display
Multimedia

That will get us basic information about the hardware and OS the system has.

You right click on the My Computer tab and then select the Properties tab.

You can also get the information by:
Click the Start icon on the desktop
Select the Run tab
Enter cmd in the box
When you get the Cmd processor screen, enter Winver

Many thanks everyone for your help. I found the Belarc program particularly
useful. I'll keep trying to see if I can improve things.

My guess is that you have 512 mb of RAM mememory, The problem you have
is that your memory usage exeeds the RAM and your system is make use of
the pagefile. Accessing the pagefile slows the system and leads to the
type of problems you are experiencing.

Others will suggest you add 512 mb RAM and that may be ppart of the
solution but I suspect you can be more frugal with your use of memory.
When you have done this you should establish your typical memory usage
to establish what extra memory is appropriate.

You may be able to improve system performance by changing programmes
from starting during the boot process to loading on demand. Minimising
multi-tasking will help. Putting shortcuts like Show Desktop, Internet
Explorer, Outlook Express and Windows Explorer in the Quick Launch Tray
may help to encourage you to close these applications after use as it is
easy to reopen them when required.

Minimising the use of Add-Ons with Internet Explorer will help.

Avoid seciuity software which generates excessive demands for memory.
McAfee and Norton products are notably among those to be avoided.

Avoid using facilities which run in the background when they can be run
when the computer is not being used. An example is Diskeeper which can
continuously defragment when it can be set to run on demand.
