it seems that i cannot do any updates with norton. after speaking to them
they are saying it's a problem with microsoft. any suggestions. this is
causing me to get logged off of some sites automatically when i try to sign
in. i also cannot do any virus updates with norton.

"Let Microsoft fix it" is NOT going to work for the Norton folks, or you
either. Uninstall it if they refuse to help. Get something that works.
Since I never install unknown executables, and have never had a virus, I'm
now running, and always have run without antivirus. This is a personal
decision. You should decide that for yourself, and consider some of the
alternatives others will no doubt offer.
Running with a trashed anti-virus is really not an alternative, whatever you
decide. Be confident that there are lots of good ways to solve this.

"It's Microsoft's fault" is a universal cop-out used by many software -
and OEM computer - companies that usually translates: "Beats us what
the problem is".

Your best bet - at least worth considering - is to remove Norton and
download one of the good free AV programs: Avast!, Kaspersky, AVG;
there are several more. Remove Norton first by going to their website
and downloading their "Removal cleanup tool". Also get the new AV
program online that you'll install. Then go offline and begin removing
Norton by using it's built-in removal program, THEN, run it's "Cleanup"
program you downloaded, THEN install the new AV software you chose.
This is all *if* you decide to delete the Norton - but when they say "We
can't help you", and you cannot download updates - sheesh, whaddya going
to do?

Good luck with it,

Tony

I could not agree more!

Norton (and McAffee) are about as bad as it gets.

Though I use AVG (free) and like it...another good one (free) is Avast

Did they have you run the online LiveUpdate Installer AutoFix tool?
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/1999051911110813

Or the downloadable one you run from your PC?
http://service1.symantec.com/Suppor...iew=docid&pid=1999051911110813&pkb=sharedtech

If your using a 2008 product, the sites may be being blocked by it phishing, spam
and identity safe. If you disable them you should be able to get the updates and
then afterwards re-enable them.

How to ask a question: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375

Symantec rarely admits that THEY have a problem. It is always your PC, or
some else's software. However, to blame Microsoft is a new one. Ddi they
say what Microsoft program or file was causing this behavior? A firewall
might be able to do this, or an anti-spyware program. Do you happen to use
those by Microsoft? If so, try almost any other brand (several free), and
then turn off the Microsoft ones.

Additionally, internet explorer setting might lock out part of the the
internet, if the security setting were too tight. Try restoring the
defaults, whihc is an option in the IE settings. I hope that you are using
IE6, and not IE7, which seems buggier.

You might try contacting Symantec again, and maybe you will get a more
knowledgeable service representative.

That said, Symnatec's Live Update is not all that reliable. Every year or
two the Live Update feature of my Norton installation fails to work, usually
just after an update to Norton that changed live update.

The fix is usually to find the latest version of the Live Update installer
on the Symantec website and re-install it. Then, sometimes one has to
manually "register" products with the live update service. The instructions
to do this are usually somewhere on the Symnatec website, under Live Update
problems. But, one needs to spend some time looking for the fix and info.
Searching the Symantec website for the text of the error message from Live
Update, such as LU1875, will usually get you there.

An alternative to live updates for Norton are manual updates. These are
listed weekly, or more often, on the Major Geeks website. Be sure to get
the right set, 2003-2007, or 2008. For example:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Virus_Definitions_2003-07_d3995.html

Of course, this link simply points back to Symantec, but I find Major Geeks
better organized.

The retail version of Norton can play havoc with your pc. Uninstall it
using Norton's own uninstall tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
and get a refund :)
As suggested on the site, you may wish to print out the directions before
proceeding.
Or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

While Norton's removal tool usually gets the job done, you may also want to
go to:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
and download a copy of winsockxpfix just in case. Rarely, the removal of
NIS breakes the networking components in XP to the point where internet
access is impossible. This little utility will fix it back up.

If the Norton removal tool doesn't work satisfactory use this:
Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Remove unwanted programs and traces easily
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
and/or
RegSeeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker will remove all associated detritus (registry keys, files and
folders) from any application. I found this application user friendly and
very effective but suggest *not* to use the 'Clean the Registry' option.
Click onto 'Find in registry' and in the 'Search for' box type *Norton*;
The pertinent registry keys can then be safely deleted (just in case,
ensure that the 'Backup before deletion' is checked). Repeat the task by
typing in the Search for' box *Symantec*. You can then go on search and
remove associated files as well.
Then use NTREGOPT to compact the registry; Follow instructions.
