Hi everybody,
I have this kind of problem with Nikon Coolscan 5000.

The first time I've installed the software Nikon Scan (I think the
version 4.0) the scanner worked well.
After one month, the scanner started with this problem: when I open
the program, the button Preview and Scan in the main window are not
activated.

I've already update USB drivers but the error is the same, i don't use
any USB tools (mouse etc..).
I have a new PC Intel Centrino, 216 MB Ram and Windows HP Home
Edition.

What can I do?
thank you
Alessandra

Sounds like the software isn't finding the scanner so is the scanner
being recognised by Windows in the first place? Check under System
Properties (or whatever the XP equivalent is - I am using W98SE) and
look for Imaging Devices, where it should be listed.
What can I do?

If it is not listed, then check all the cables and connectors as a first
step - that might solve it.

If it is listed then it sounds like the scanner driver itself is
corrupted, so you will need to uninstall Nikonscan, reboot and
reinstall.

Ciao Kennedy
I've already checked connectors and cables. I've already uninstalled
and reinstalled. The problem is always there. Nikon Scan seems to me
remember the set up (It remembers also the number of the last dia.
DO you think it is necessary formatting the operating system?
Thank you very much for yiur help

When you initiate NikonScan does this message appear: "NikonScan was not
able to detect any active devices"?
Is the scanner icon (to the right of the question mark in the tool bar)
grayed-out? If not, what happens when you press it? Does the LS-5000 icon
appear in the Scanners and Cameras folder of the Control Panel?

My firewire scanner requires that it be powered-up after the PC has been
fully booted. Does this apply to your scanner?

If Nikonscan is remembering any of your settings then it is not being
uninstalled completely. There is a file called RegSweeper.exe in the
Utilities directory of the Nikonscan CD or the softare you have upgraded
to which may be necessary to completely remove all trace of NikonScan.

Have you had any success in checking if Windows is detecting the scanner
itself?

Formatting the OS really is a last resort and I would try to avoid that
at all costs. Apart from anything else, it loses all of your personal
settings and can take ages to reinstall all the other applications and
personalisations that you have for them.

Hi everybody,
Yesterday I've restored the operating system.
After that, I've installed Nikon Scan and the first messagge was
exactly this "NikonScan was not able to detect any active devices" and
the icon 'Scan' and 'preview' are always grey.
I can't press it and I can't do anything.
The scanner is correctly reconnized on the Scanners and Cameras folder
of the Control Panel.
Do you think is possible thinking abouta connector problem? Or is
probably a problem on my PC? Or a USB problem?
I don't know what else I can do.

You did not say what OS you are using, XP maybe?
If the OS is XP, you must have SP1 from Microsoft Update for the USB to work
correctly.

Right click My Computer, properties. Open Device Manager and look for any
errors in the devices. The errors will be obvious, the Device Manager will
open with those branches open and marked with yellow or red.

If you find any errors, remove the offending device and reboot. XP will then
try to find a driver.

While in the Device manager check the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Must
be working.

You should (must) install the Nikon Coolscan software before connecting the
Scanner.
If the software install was faulty, then uninstall the software, reboot,
install again.

Good points,

If you end up installing service pack 1, you must also tell
windows to reinstall USB drivers (at least that was my experience).

I had the same problem about a month ago, and did all of the things
you've done - without success. I finally tried using Windows XP's
System Restore to restore my system to a previous time when NikonScan
was operating properly. It worked for me. Perhaps you could try that.
Good luck.

Hallo,
im'm checking tonight your suggest and, after that, i'll tell you the result.
Thanks to everybody
