Problems with Neverwinter Nights

I'm using R9600+Cat 3.9+WinXP Pro. Neverwinter Nights keeps crashing after a
few minutes of play (it completely hangs my PC, I have to reboot). BUT if I
enable (in bios and smartgart options) FAST WRITES it works without problems
(played for hours and doesn't crash). This however is not a practical
solution since with Fast Writes enabled everything else is heavily distorted
including desktop and every other 3D title. Could be an OpenGL specific
problem, but NWN is the only OGL game/program I have so I cannot confirm
this.

Next thing I'm going to try is Omega drivers. Any other possible fixes to
try?

Ps. NWN updated to the latest possible version with Undrentide and Underdark
addons installed.

I run the latest version of NWN ( no add ons ) and on my card it runs
fine, with fast writes on!

Sometimes a bit "jerky" but since the game is programmed from an
nvidia mind ( just look at the anti-aliasing settings ) I can only
guess it's because of not optimal programming on such points!

Ya know, a fix on ati cards is normally to run high level anti
aliasing and aniso schemes :), how harder the card actually has to
work, how better the performance and stability!

It's not like nvidia, where raising Anti Aliasing and Aniso plummets
the card into damn lower framerates!

So try to up everything to the max! I guess that might work!

Hmm, I guess I'll give it a try...allthough my current settings (AAx2,
1024x768, every setting at maximum) is already a bit too much in some places
in the game. But this isn't actually the problem in question. With FAST
WRITES on, the game works without problems: but everything else is corrupt,
even desktop (vertical lines, icons are messed up etc). So I really, truly
cannot enable Fast Writes (it's a bit of a hassle to change smartgart
setting and reboot, just to play one particular game (I normally boot maybe
once every two wooks or so, my PC is always on) ).

But I'll give it a try...Set AA to maximum and see if the game stays
playable (lowering to 800x600 isn't of the question, considering extreme AA
setting)

Nope, didn't help. 800x600, Nice 4x AA....didn't take more then 10 seconds
for game to crash (after a saved game was loaded and the game entered
3D/OpenGL mode). It's bad enough the game crashes, but it also totally hangs
my computer: reset button is the only thing that works... I guess I'll try
the Omegas now...though I'm not excepting it to help either.

Indeed, Omega's didn't help either...I guess I'll have to live with it for
the time being. There is a notice at Omegacorner website though, that says
ATI is aware of R9600 series having problems with Fast Writes setting and
are working for a fix. Hope it doesn't take too long.

You actually can un-install smartgart... Omegacorner has a tool for
that, SmartGart might be the thing that makes it unstable!

I doubt that's the problem. I don't have to disable/enable Fast Writes in
BIOS, Smartgart setting is enough the make the game work/create distortions
elsewhere. But worth a try anyway.

Yup, no chance...

Didn't help either...since it's most likely not the cause of the problem.
Removing Smartgart just prevents me from switching between Fast Writes ON
and OFF without going to BIOS... (though reboot is necessary anyway, but
still a bit easier then messing with bios settings).
