I have had this same problem for some time now and have
not been able to find an answer anywhere. I think the the
problem is that when you create user accounts on the
windows XP PRO the useraccounts are created with
computername\username. When you give permissions to the
folders the permissions are based on
computername\username. When another computer on the
network tries to access the share access is denied because
the computername\username is different from what was set.
I cannot find any way to browse the network and select a
user account other that the local computer account, unless
your XP PRO computer is on a domain.
I am very interested to find out if anyone has an answer
to this issue.

Thank you

Hi guys,

Why not have to shared folders with different
usernames/passwords...
Connect both as "Mapped network drives" and use the
"Connect using different username" when you map the
drive... should work perfectly....
Groetjes !

Well Jeroen -

Yes this can be done, however is a bit tricky. I am
assuming that the XP machine is a stand alone - not
joined to a domian. First I would get rid of the built
in firewall on the machine. Then I would create the
directories. Right click on them, then sharing. I don't
recall if there was a wizard or not, I think there is. I
think I canceled out of that wizard, and said just share
the folder. At this point if you were to set the
permissions on that folder it should restrict, or allow
users as setup allowed.

In response to haydensmith, your problem resides with
something else. You have to allow the users to login to
the host from a remote client. This can be done from the
local Security Settings. Users will allways be created
as "domainname\username" however, when credentials are
passed off the first time, it only uses the username and
password. Then again I could be wrong. I have done it
that way in the past, however, I was joined to a domain.
I logged in as the local Administrator, and was able to
acess every share on the file server because the
credentials were the same.
