Problems with my LPT1 and CD RW drive after upgrading from ME toXP Pro

Hopefully this issue has been address previously and someone knows the
answer.

This may involve two separate issues. First and foremost is my LPT1.
My Canon LPB-8III was working fine. Offline it still prints test pages
fine. I've even moved the printer to my OTHER XP PC and it still
refuses to work properly. When I send a document to the printer, as the
first page begins to print, the printer begins to beep. There's no
indication on the LCD that there's a problem and WinXP just says it
can't print the document. As the first page comes out, I notice that it
may not finish printing the entire page. Suddenly it'll start grabbing
another sheet of paper and continue the process until I shut off the
power to the printer.

In addition, I have a Security Block hanging off the LPT1 for my trading
software. The problem here is that it too doesn't work, even though
I've made all the changes the "gurus" said should be done.

I've removed the Security Block to determine if the printer would work
OK without, and no change.

Canon won't support the printer because it's too old. Ditto with my
trading software.

Secondly, my Gateway 1.5gig desktop came with a CD RW drive. It worked
with ME and Roxio's original software. Again, once I upgraded to XP
Pro, the software didn't work. So I upgraded to their latest release,
and while the software work up and to the point of copying my files, I'm
left with no "copy" capability. Roxio doesn't appear too interested as
I've noted others are having the problem. The solution on THEIR forum
is to purchased Nova, as competing product. Now does that make sense?

My suspicions are that something somewhere related to LPT1 HAS changed.
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Craig,

Your printer isn't supported for a reason. Canon has decided, for whatever
reason, that the unit should not be supported in WinXP. This may be because
it is too old, it simply cannot be made to be compatible, or that the
necessary driver files for it to work require too much on Canon's part to
produce them. There is no profit in producing new drivers for old printers.
Time for a new printer.

Same thing for your trading software, except there is little that the
program vendor can do about it. It likely requires direct hardware access to
detect the security dongle. Something that will not happen in WinXP, as it
does not allow for that sort of direct hardware access by software. Time for
new trading software as well.

On a bit of a negative roll here, but Roxio stinks. Dump it, get rid of it
and buy their competition's software. Roxio has a history of being
unsupportive and having major problems porting their various release
versions between different versions of Windows. Their theory seems to be
that you should buy a new full version of their product with each new
release of Windows.

Rick would you then suggest that using an "older" print driver say from
WinME or 95 might be the solution? If so, I'm not sure as to how I
would get it off my older installation CD.

Hi Craig,

If anything *might* work, it would be a Win2000 driver *if* Canon made one.
Check their web site to see if one is offered.
