Andrew

I installed the latest 1.1.5 driver downloaded from the website.
The quick scan utility works fine, but I got a lot of problems
with the basis scan utility.

With the basis scan, I can scan the index, but when I tried to
prescan, the program complained about "closing other scan programs"
Sometimes the prescan program just freezes and I had to power it off.

Have I done anything wrong? I just follow the directions in the
manuals....

What Utility (basis scan) are you asking about?
There are three selections available to me when I open the Dimage software
program.
1. DiMage Scan Utility
2. Easy Scan Utility
3. Batch Scan Utility
I had some problems like that, that drove me up a wall. when I was using the
DiMage ver 1.1.3 software but none since I installed the ver 1.1.5 software.
I just tried using the number 1 selection listed above with a group of 4
slides and things worked OK. I could index scan and prescan any of the four
slides OK.
I had to make sure I removed all of the references to the DiMage software
before I installed the new version.
Try rebooting your computer from a cold start (donot choose close and
reopen) and then start your scanning again with only the scanning program
open. Other than that, look at other utilities that are opened during your
start up that may be trying to access the files for viruses etc.
Good Luck

The Easy Scan Utility works fine. The other two utilities give me problems.
I reinstalled the driver twice, still have problem. I could index scan.
But when I chose an image from the thumnail index and tried to prescan,
it froze.

I do not have other imaging software open. I do have email and
Norton realtime anti-virus on. Also, I rebooted the computer and
scanner several times, but still the same. I hope that this is a driver
issue,
not related to the hardware....

The error is "Error=1, unknown error, Confirm all otherDiMAGE Scan
software is closed" and "Error=12, Hardware Error"

What could be wrong?

Please help....

Oh no! Bad idea! To update the DiMAGE Scan
software (as opposed to first-time installing), you
must not remove the older version before installing
the new.

Instead, simply install the new version twice. If it
finds an older version of itself it will remove it in a
controlled manner, and stop. Then you have to start
the Setup executable a second time, and this time it
will install itself *and* preserve all saved settings of
the old version.

Removing the old version manually prior to installing
the new one means asking for problems ... unless
you really, really removed *all* bits, pieces, and
references to the old DiMAGE version ...

And don't forget to switch off the scanner while
updating the scan software ...!

When I first installed my Dimage software for my new 5400 a couple
weeks ago, I got a message similar to that. Got it when trying to
bring up the Minolta software the first time (which it wouldn't,
it'd wait for quite a while before it timed out with a message
like that one).

I uninstalled my old Polacolor scanner software for my old
polaroid film scanner and I moved the 5400's USB2 cable from
a "front of my machine" port to one of the back ones where
other things were connected. And rebooted (again). Worked
just fine since then although I haven't tried the basis (basic?)
mode.

After that it worked. I havem't tried the front again to
see which did the fixing. Have any other ports? The hardware
error phrase in the message is what makes it sound maybe like
the USB or firewire port connection is flaky.

P.S. - What I *really* did was to pull the cable off of my
Epson 2450 and plug it onto the 5400 (easier to do,
computer's on the floor with back to a wall). So
it was a different cable too.

I managed to get it work with another computer. But it still does not work
with my main PC. I'm sure this is a software issue.

I've switched USB ports, USB cables, etc, but still the same.

I may try to use the other PC, but it is short on RAM.....
