Problems with Media player & Vista

Well, HL, I share your problem and have spent many hours in unsuccessful
attempts to fix the problem. At least I can tell you what did not work for
me:

1. Reinstall just Media player. Can't do since it's built-in to Vista.

2. Do a "repair install" by booting to the DVD and using that menu choice:
went through the entire process and nothing was found.

3. Ran the following command from the command prompt, which is supposed to
compare the boot partition (whatever that is) to the installed Vista,
identify problems and fix 'em: sfc /scannow. Didn't do anything.

I also am unable to run a key software program I use in my research, though
it runs on two other Vista machine and used to run on the one where I'm
having the Media Player problem now. Ironically, I previuosly did an XP
upgrade to Vista on what was then my main production machine (stupid, I know)
and it so thoroughly screwed up the system that I spent $3,000 and bought a
new computer to get a "clean installation" of Vista, which is now a crippled
mess.

Needless to say, I am a reluctant, unhappy and unfortunately committed Vista
user. If you or anyone reading this comes up with a solution to this problem
that does not involve wiping out the hard drive and starting from scratch,
I'd sure be grateful.
