Ok, here's the deal
I'm running a 2.8 p-4 on an intel D865perl boar
I can directly plug into the cable modem, but once plugged into the router, it doesn't work
I can't ping the router or any of the other computers that are connected to it. The other computers are working perfectly
When I try to obtain an IP address automatically, it assigns one of the 169.254.xx
assigning a static ip doesn't work either
the router model is a: "befsr41
please help! thanks

I sure hope somebody can provide a solution to your problem, because I have
a similar problem with a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 with an Integrated Intel 10/100
Ethernet adapter running Windows XP Professional with a Linksys WRT54G
router.

My problem differs from yours slightly, in that if I power off my computer,
router, and cable modem, and then power them back on - my router will assign
a valid IP address that my system will use fine for a few minutes. But,
then without any warning, an usually within 5 to 10 minutes, the valid IP
address is lost, and an address of 169.254.X.X is assigned. From that point
on, nothing really works until I power off all the equipment again.

I have also tried assigning a static IP address, but that does not appear to
work for me either.

Hello
I am not sure if I can help, have you checked your Local Area Connection
Properties to make sure Client for MS Networks>File and Print
Sharing>Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) is installed, I also have NWLink
NetBios>NWLink IPX/SPX installed on mine and it allows me to access my
network with the firewalls on, I also have it set to obtain IP address
automatically, obtain DNS server automatically, you might try this website
if all else fails.

First (you might have already done this) shut down everything. Power
cycle the modem, leaving it off for about a minute. This will clear the
modem MAC table. Power on the modem, when it has booted, power on the
router, then boot the computers. Check for valid IP address and
connectivity.

If that doesn't work then try purging the DNS cache: command
prompt/type: ipconfig /flushdns . reboot and see it that helps.

If all that doesn't work, then repeat step one, but when powering the
router, hold down the reset button on the back (yours might need a
probe) for about 10 seconds. This will reset the router but does not
reset to defaults. You can do this step first if you like, but I
always power cycle the modem without any other changes to point to the
source of the problem.

Another potential source is that the wiring has degraded and will only
support 10Mb/s and the NIC autodetect isn't picking up the degradation
and setting 100Mb/s. Setting 10Mb/s in the NIC properties will diagnose
this. Reboot.
