problems with installing vista

I have, on my desktop, xp media center edition 2005 and i want to go to vista
ultimate. i have done a destructive recovery already, which is ok because i
want to do a clean install, and have spent almost 3 days working nonstop. So
i guess i'll move on to my problem. First i had the problem of error
0x80070241 but i got past that quite easily. That happened during copying
the files. My next problem is when it tries to expand the files. When doing
a clean install, it hits 27% and then says it cannot update the boot
configuration. So, as many other people have had this problem, i've googled
it and found mainly one solution, which was to change the registry key
UpperFilters.bak to UpperFilters and make sure it has PartMgr as that data.
Well i looked for that and that was already like that. I updated my BIOS and
i didn't find a scanner that protects the boot registry. I don't have any
antivirus installed. I really don't have much installed, i just updated to
microsoft update so it could receive the updates recommended for install. I
have even tried using an image drive or whatever it's called because it
worked for one person. If you need any information about my computer just
ask and i appreciate any help that i can get.

i believe it's supposed to reboot at this 27% mark, and i don't know what to
do to fix it.

i've also tried not getting the upgrades and not putting in my registration
key, but none of that changed anything. I've also done upgrades instead of
clean installs and that only thing that changed was that it came up with the
error at 21% instead of 27%.

the error is: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration.
Installation cannot proceed." then i have to click ok and it closes.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated, and again, if you need to
know anything just let me know and i'll give it to you.

Hey Jimmy,

welcome to the club.
I'm having similar problems (with my PC there is no error message however),
but it is quite obvious that Vista fails to implement a proper boot sector.
After reboot around 21 to 26% the PC hangs and is unable to boot.
That's it.
I tried lots of things, up to now nothing helped.
Clean install or update, it doesn't matter ...

:-(

Well i installed vista ultimate just about an hour ago and if you haven't
already got it working, let me know and i can help you.

Hey - congrats!

How did you do it? BIOS?? Memory??

Presently I'm not doing anything about Vista. I'm still waiting for a reply
from support for my PC.

Mike

hey mike,
well i had used vLite from vLite.net to change the files that i got off of
the disk (because i tried doing a flat installation) to get past my first
problem and i noticed that i could make a bootable iso off of it, so that's
what i did. I made a bootable iso and burned it onto a dvd and then booted
my computer with that disk and it just worked fine, no special techniques
needed. It's worth a shot, i mean, for my computer if it didn't work i still
had a recovery drive that would bring everything back. Let me know if you
get it working.

hey jim,

now let me get that straight:

you tried to make a flat installation (but without removing XP and without
totally cleaning the disk).
Then the installation failed.
You returned to XP.
And with the files Vista did write onto your disk and vlite you created a
bootable DVD. Then you booted with that DVD and could continue with the
installation?? (I guess you had to put in again the Vista DVD at some time).

Is that what you did?

Thanks, Mike

hey mike,
yes i tried to make a flat installation without removing xp (i was doing
clean installations because i had backed everything up onto an external hard
drive)
yes the installation failed, many times.
Yes i was stuck with xp.
And yes, with the Vista files from the DVD that i put onto my drive and that
vlite altered, i created a bootable DVD.
Yes i then booted with that DVD and did a clean installation that worked
just fine.
No i did not have to put in the vista DVD anymore.
Everything worked.
i hope this helps you. Write back if it doesn't.
jim

Hey Jimmy,

do you - by any chance - remember what you altered?
What did you deselect?

I just created a bootable disk with vlite and deselected some items I
definitely don't need (like chinese and japanese language packs) and I'm
going to give it a try - probably tomorrow.

I first want to make another full backup!

;-))

Keep you posted!

Mike

PS: Where are you?
Germany here!

hey Mike,
well i didn't get rid of anything and i didn't add any drivers. On mine,
there were three things it asked me if i wanted to keep. I kept those but i
don't think it matters either way. It would be a good idea to create a full
backup. Good luck with it tomorrow. I'm from Wisconsin, USA. Right now i'm
going to school at the University of Wisconsin: Madison. I'm also on the
track team, we're ranked one of the best in the country. hope to hear if it
worked, i hope it does
jim

Hey Jim,

unfortunately it didn't work. Same procedure as usual: "Disk read error" at
first boot attempt.

Although this 'brain-dead' Upgrade Advisor didn't find anything harmful at
all I'm pretty much convinced now that this must be some sort of hardware
issue.

Somebody told me that the type of memory-controller I have might not be
properly supported by the Vista installer, although it would be supported by
the OS once installed. If that really is the case I'm hoping for some sort of
fix by Microsoft (HELLO THERE!!!).

Otherwise I could try to get Vista on my Drive by using SB-Software. That
could be a way ... don't know yet.

But thanks for your kind help anyhow.

Just 'google-earthed' Madison, WI. Nice lakes you've got there. So you're on
the track team. What distances are you running??

Greetings,

Mike
