problems with installing software on XP (Home edition)

Hi, two times I do not arrive in installing software on my XP home edition.
The following messages occured after the installation wizzard started :

"c:\windsows\systems32\autoexec.nt the systemfile is not suited for MD-Dos
and MS Windows applications. Choose Close to quit". (translated from Dutch)

I had the problem when wanting to install Visual Basic 6.0 (which installs
without any problem on my Win 98 machine) and AVG antivirus software (free
download from the web).

help .. what can I do ?
