Problems with Images

After saving my local page and publishing it to Front Page my images appear
as a blank rectangle with a red "x".

I have used Front Page and eBay's Turbo Lister for a long time. For the
last 2-3 days my images no longer appear on Turbo lister (whether I use a
relative or absolute link).

I have checked my internet browser settings and everything appears to be the
same as always. I have reinstalled my drivers.

Can anyone suggest what might be happening?

Hi Anna,

First things first: Don't reinstall anything unless you have a reason to.
That is, find out what the problem is before taking any action that may
change your operating system or installed software. Otherwise, as has
happened in the past, you may end up digging yourself into a worse hole than
you started out in. We are here to help you find out what the problem is,
and as you can see, you will get an answer very quickly on these newsgroups!
:-)

Now, as to the reason for your problem, your message seems to indicate a
fundamental misunderstanding of how FrontPage works with web pages and web
sites, and this is vital to understand in order to use it successfully. If
you understand this, much of what remains will be relatively easy.

A web site is not the same thing as the file system on a computer, although
in many ways it certainly seems to look and behave like one. But a web site
is a collection of inter-connected HTML documents, images, and other files,
which are linked together via hyperlinks and other types of links to URLs
within the same web site (as well as to other web sites). A web *page* is a
single HTML document. These terms are often misunderstood and misused by end
users, but the difference is highly significant.

FrontPage is used both for the purpose of creating HTML documents (and
related files), and for managing web sites. Links within a web site are
typically "relative," which means that the full URL
("http;//domain.domain.ext/virtualfolder/virtualfolder/filename.html" for
example) is not necessary. For example, if a hyperlink within the same web
site points to a file in the same virtual folder, only te file name is
necessary. BUT, as I said, a virtual (web) folder is not the same as a file
system folder. Again, FrontPage can be used to create individual HTML
documents, which do not even have to be hosted on a web server, but may even
reside in your local machine's file system. I would imagine that if you
searched your computer for files with a .htm or .html extension, you would
find many of them.

So, how does FrontPage know when a file is part of a web site? You must
either open or create a new FrontPage web site. Once the web site is opened,
FrontPage keeps track of the relative locations of all the files in it, and
makes sure that the URL locations are correct within the context of the web
site. If you do *not* open a web site first, FrontPage logically assumes
that you are working on a local HTML file, and will put in links that point
to file locations on your local machine.

Now, (forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know, but I don't
know if you do) an HTML document is pure text. Images displyed in a browser
are fetched by the browser via their image markup tags in the HTML document.
The markup tags have a URL that tells the browser where to find the images.
If the browser can not find the images, it will display a red "X" in their
places in the page.

So, I am suspecting that you opened a page in FrontPage without opening a
web site first, and that the links to images are most likely pointing to a
location on your local hard drive. If you open the web site in FrontPage
first, and then the page in the web site, and edit the image links to point
to the locations of those images in the web site, it will be corrected.

Thank you for your reply. I wanted to elaborate a bit on the problem we're
having....

We had to have a new motherboard installed 4 days ago. The problem with
images started right after installation of the new board. Dell informed me
that a new motherboard would not cause the problems with images. They
suggested reinstalling the graphics driver - which has been done.

We make our web changes "on the fly" so our remote site is always opened
first. I have discovered that after I make a change to our remote site and
save the changes, at that point the images cease to appear and the links stop
working. Also, the links are pointing to the correct address -- they are
simply not working for some reason.
I' m also not certain if adding a new motherboard does anything to the Front
Page extensions that were installed by Verio when we first installed Front
Page. I do not get an error message from Front Page when saving or
publishing a changed file.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Anna D.
