Sorry about the confusion. I did start the string by asking about
possible
problems with
IE8. At one time, while I had automatic updates activated, IE7 got
installed and it caused
me problems with Outlook Express. I eventually wound up unistalling
IE7.
For some time
now there have been sites that I've gone to that have said that I
couldn't
fully utilize their
site unless I had IE7 or higher. I don't remember the actual sites but
very
recently I
received that same type message from Direct TV. com. So I thought I
might
venture into
installing IE8. I follow the instructions you provided and everything
appeared to be fine.
Then my one laptop started launching NAV minimized on the task bar.
This
started
happening almost imediately after installing IE8. I just assumed that
is
what caused this
to happen. There's no pattern that I can see that causes this to happen.
The machine
has been setting idle and I opened the top and NAV was minimized on the
task
bar.
I am running NAV 2010 on this machine and my desktop. I'm running
Norton
internet
security on a mini laptop.

I'm still having the problem
Which/what problem?
Are you now running NAV 2010 and is it working properly, as far as you
know?
I just find it hard to believe that this doesn't have something
to do with the installation of IE8. It started happening right after
I
installed it.
This long thread started with you stating, "I currently am running IE 6
however there are a number of sites that I go to
frequently that just don't function properly." IOW, you were having a
problem with "a number of sites" before you installed IE8, Homer.
Speaking of which, what sites are they?

:
1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the
taskbar).
3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy,
uninstall NAV & LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.
4. IMPORTANT! => Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled.
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online
(e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step
#7
below!
5. Double-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above to run the
utility.
Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot again.
6. Do a clean install of NAV 2010 using your Product ID & reboot:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN
TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton
Anti-Phishing) just yet.
7. Manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a "no more
updates"
prompt.
8. Test.

The machine that it happens on is a Dell laptop running windows XP
All 3 of my machines are running NAV and the subscriptions and
updates
are
all current.
I didn't have any trial anti-virus installed on any of them.
It's just odd that this started happening right after I installed
IE8.
I orginally misspoke. NAV launches and the window is minimized on
the
task
bar. I really don't think
it has anything to do with email protection. I've had it turned on
and
it
is still launching.

Which computer & Windows version?
Assuming NAV is installed on all three computers, did a Norton (or
McAfee)
free trial come preinstalled on any of them?
...I've several chat sessions with Symantec with no
resolution. They seem to think that the problem is that I have
email
protection turned off. I've always had it turned off on all my
machines
without a problem.
Symantec Support's blowing smoke up your kilt. Email scanning
provides
no
additional protection and even Symantec has said that it's not
necessary:
<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against
viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus
Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive,
including
email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top
of
this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum
protection,
keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure
that
you
have the most recent virus definitions.

...This started to happen after I installed IE8. Is there
possibly some connection?
IMHO, not a chance, Homer. That being said, please answer the 2
questions
above.

My personal recommendations include:
=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic

=>

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run
it.
When

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run
it.
When
you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and
select
Run as Administator.
=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo;

and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.
=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar

enabling

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8. [Do
