Homer

I currently am running IE 6 however there are a number of sites that I go to
frequently that just don't function properly. I would like to upgrade to IE
8 but I had such problems with IE 7, especially regarding Outlook Express
that I'm concerned about installing IE 8. I've also read about problems with
IE 8 as well. Is there any justification for my concern?

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via telephone (based on your locale) and has been
extended until 02 July 2010. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows
Vista in a non-domain environment.

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! =>
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select Run
as Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8. [Do NOT use
System Restore to remove/uninstall IE8; instead, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700. Then use the Restore Point prior to
reinstalling IE8 per these recommendations. Norton users will need to see
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html.]

NB WinXP users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then go
to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any
Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB976325). If a Root Certificates
update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full
advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB Vista users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then
check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates
offered.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application version, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender),
and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 before you
decide install it.

Thanks for the quick response. I've followed your instructions and IE8
appears to be working OK. However, should I have a problem, and I would want
to unistall, I wasn't able to get the article you suggested:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700.
When I clicked on the link, I received a message that it was not available.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I'm running Norton AV, it is current, I don't have a third party firewall,
the anti spyware is part of Norton. None of those applications were running.
Per your instructions I did have the Windows firewall running during the
downloaed. When I tried the links for unistalling IE8 was after I installed
IE8 and I restored my anti virus and turned off the windows firewall and
turned on the firewall from Norton.

Please disrecard my last response. I was clicking on the link in your
response. I just noticed that there was a period at the end of the link. I
cut and pasted it without the period and it worked fine. Sorry.

[Yes, I saw your other post about the period and the link.]

Repost:

Thanks for all of your help on this problem. I downloaded IE8 on all 3 of my
machines following all of your instructions. The day following my
installation on one of my machines I started having NAV launch on the desktop
by itself. I've several chat sessions with Symantec with no resolution.
They seem to think that the problem is that I have email protection turned
off. I've always had it turned off on all my machines without a problem.
This started to happen after I installed IE8. Is there possibly some
connection?

Symantec Support's blowing smoke up your kilt. Email scanning provides no
additional protection and even Symantec has said that it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

IMHO, not a chance, Homer. That being said, please answer the 2 questions

.

.

1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy, uninstall
NAV & LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

4. IMPORTANT! => Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below!

5. Double-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above to run the utility.
Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot again.

6. Do a clean install of NAV 2010 using your Product ID & reboot:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton
Anti-Phishing) just yet.

7. Manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates"
prompt.

8. Test.

The machine that it happens on is a Dell laptop running windows XP

All 3 of my machines are running NAV and the subscriptions and updates are
all current.

Let's please just discuss the computer where you're having the problem,

Answer the following questions by number in your reply:
Then my one laptop started launching NAV minimized on the task bar.

I am running NAV 2010 on this machine and my desktop. I'm running Norton
internet security on a mini laptop.

1. Am I correct in concluding the you're running NAV 2010 on the laptop
computer where NAV is now being "minimized to the task bar?" [yes/no]

2. Did you disable NAV prior to installing IE8 on this laptop computer?
[yes/no]

3. Did you uninstall NAV, run the Norton Removal Tool, and then reinstall
NAV (per Steps #1 through #8 in my previous reply) on this laptop computer?
[yes/no]

4. Did a Norton (or McAfee) free trial come preinstalled when you bought
this laptop computer *and* did you install the paid version of NAV *before*
the free trial period had expired? [yes/no]

Then my one laptop started launching NAV minimized on the task bar. This
started
happening almost imediately after installing IE8. I just assumed that is
what caused this
to happen. There's no pattern that I can see that causes this to happen.

I'm still having the problem

Which/what problem?

Are you now running NAV 2010 and is it working properly, as far as you
know?
I just find it hard to believe that this doesn't have something
to do with the installation of IE8. It started happening right after I
installed it.

This long thread started with you stating, "I currently am running IE 6
however there are a number of sites that I go to
frequently that just don't function properly." IOW, you were having a
problem with "a number of sites" before you installed IE8, Homer.

Speaking of which, what sites are they?

Thanks again for all your help on this problem. I followed your
instructions to the letter and
I'm still having the problem. I just find it hard to believe that this
doesn't have something
to do with the installation of IE8. It started happening right after I

Thanks again. I appears that I'm just going to have to live with this.

:
1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the
taskbar).

3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy,
uninstall NAV & LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

4. IMPORTANT! => Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online
(e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step
#7
below!

5. Double-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above to run the
utility.
Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot again.

6. Do a clean install of NAV 2010 using your Product ID & reboot:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton
Anti-Phishing) just yet.

7. Manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a "no more
updates"
prompt.

8. Test.
