I have a HP ScanJet 4100C. It has been working great for some time
now and I am not sure what has changed to make it not work.

When I use the scanner and camera wizard, all functions work fine,
with the exception of any type of preview or any type of custom
setting.

If I hit preview on any of the selections (color, b&w, etc.) the error
message is "An error occurred during preview. If the scanner is being
used, please wait for it to complete the task, and then click preview"

If I try to select custom and choose custom settings I get, "An error
occurred while setting scanner preferences. If the scanner is being
used, please wait for it to complete the task and then try again."

This is wierd because it will let me scan in most modes but not either
preview anything or use a custom setting.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the scanner, tried powering
computer and scanner down and back up, deleting all USB hub entries in
windows and reinstalling... I am not sure where to go next. I have
googled and Yahoo'ed these error messages and get no helpful info.

Any ideas?

My first guess, the scanner developed a hardware problem and you may need to
purchase a new scanner or repair.

Perhaps, but isn't there anything else I can try? It works fine in
every other mode so it's not like it's DOA.

You have tried all of the uninstall and re-install of the software and
cleaned the registry of the scanner entries.

So if you have done all of that, you have eliminated just about all of the
software causes.
That leaves only hardware trouble.

The only other test you could do is substitute another HP Scanjet 4100C for
yours.
Of course I know you don't have another 4100C to test.

I'm not an expert with the HP hardware, but it may not be a bad idea to
verify that there's no other imaging applications running at the same
time as running the WIA Wizard.

Doublecheck you don't have any imaging startup programs (other than
WIA) to verify.

Both error messages seemed to point to the device being used by another
application.

hope this helps~

I have tried that. The only other think I can think of is that I am
having problems with my CD Rom drive when writing saying it's in use
as well. I am wondering if I have something wrong in windows or
corruption in the registry. Anything there I can check?

You could either try installing on a clean windows XP environment (just
the OS and scanner drivers installed) to see if the problem follows the
scanner or see if HP can enable the debug method in the twain driver.

There's no guarantee that they have a debug twain driver, but I'd be
suprised if they didn't.

In contacting HP they provide NO support for this model due to the
age. I will be re-installing windows after X-Mas due to a MB upgrade.
I guess I will have to wait and see till then.

looks like the scanner works in every way except for these problems
with the microsoft scanner and camera wizard. Is there a way to
re-install the scanner and camera wizard without re-installing
windows?

Probably not.

However why not just ignore the Scanner and Camera wizard.
You can scan without the Microsoft Scanner and Camera wizard.

If you have the HP TWAIN installed.
All it takes is a Photo application with a TWAIN interface.
Photoshop is one (not free).

Irfanview is free. (Get plug-ins).
