Problems with home network - which cable?

Hi,

I need to connect two computers (Windows XP), not for accessing internet, but only for exchange folders. I've already set up the home network and I've already tried 2 cables (ethernet and USB A/A), but so far I had no success.

My two questions are:

1) what kind of cable do I need? Printer cable? USB? Ethernet? Other?
2) besides of setting up the home network and connecting with the cable, do I need another thing (hub, etc.)?

You need either:

1. A crossover Ethernet cable, or:

2. Two regular Ethernet cables and a hub, switch, or router, or:

3. A USB-to-USB cable, with added circuitry, that can connect two
