Somehow I managed to turn off / un-install the sound on my computer. I've
tied testing it and worked through a series of questions and still nothing.
Can anyone suggest what else can be done?

Thanks Christina

R.click my computer,properties,device mgr,expand the sound tree,R.click
on the hardware, select reinstall,or properties, see what it says...Or if you
have a PCI sound card installed, power off pc,move the card to another PCI
slot,start pc,xp will reinstall..If all fails,go to run,type:DXDIAG Run
the Direct X
sound tests..

Chrisy86,

In addition to Andrew's excellent advice:
Just as a wild guess--Is it possible that you accidentally "muted" the
sound?

Left-click on the speaker icon in your notification tray (the area on the
right-hand side of the taskbar) and make sure that Mute is not checked.

You can also access the appropriate "Troubleshooter" by:

Right-click on My Computer
Select Manage
This gets you the Computer Management "console" which is also accessible
via
Win+R | enter compmgmt.msc | hit Enter
Expand System Tools
Left-click on Device Manager
Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" item
Right-click on your sound device
Choose Properties
On the General tab, click the Troubleshoot button

This procedure works for accessing any appropriate Troubleshooter.
