As ASUS website recommended I upgraded the firmware on my ASUS 1608P DVD
drive to v 1.57. Now just hangs for several minutes when I insert a cd/dvd
and led just flashes on and off and icon does not change and autorun the
disc. When I try to take the disc out it gets mad at me and displays
dialog to put the "correct" disc back in retry, cancel, or continue. When I
click on any of these choices it displays dialog again and again and again
and again and refuses to allow me to shutdown my pc normally. I have tried
restarting in safe mode and miracle the drive works normally, it autoruns, it
opens explorer fast, no problems. How can I determine what is loading when I
start normally and causing my DVDRW to act erratically? Thx.

Did you have any DVD drive problems before the firmware change?
A firmware update gone awry can disable the DVD drive. I would try
downloading another copy of the firmware upgrade and see if a second run is
successful.
Another possiility may be that the update process stored the old version,
and can restore it. (You would need to do a bit of research to make this
work.)

Before the firmware change I had no problems of any kind and updated from
firmware version 1.17 to 1.57 because I was at the ASUS website and noticed I
was several updates behind and it came "highly recommended" from ASUS that I
have the most up to date firmware version installed. I attempted another
install from safe mode and the ASUS installer says "most current firmware
version already installed and I click on ok and installer ends. I'm looking
around to see if there is a way to restore my old firmware version and also I
have contacted ASUS to see what they can suggest..thx

Yes, I was able to flash my firmware again, only this time with the earlier
version that worked fine and now my drive works great again. Thanks for your
help..
