Hi!

In the beginning when we did not know better our 2000 domain was named
something.com

Later we found out that there are serveral internet sites that uses
www.aaa.something.com, www.bbb.something.com

This of course ends up with a problem when our users wants to visit
www.aaa.something.com and our dns doesnt find it.

I have tried a workaround with creating new domains in our dns called aaa,
bbb etc and added a www entry with right ip in those domains.

Problem is that, when a tracert www.aaa.something.com it shows an other ip
than the wan I have put in. Have tried to restart dns and flushdns with no
luck.

What am I doing wrong?

You could upgrade to Windows 2003 and use the rename option. But if you have
Exchange, that are other considerations that need to be addressed.

You could create a delegation for each subdomain, such as 'aaa' under your
something.com, and give it the IP addresses of the actual name servers that
handle that name. With this config, if a request comes in for
www.aaa.domain.com, DNS will see the aaa child delegated to the external
DNS, and will send the request to that/those servers for resolution.

Hi Ace!

2003 is not an option in this case

... so I should not try to point www.aaa.domain.com to its ip, I should
instead point it to an external dns?

If you do a delegation, yes, give it their SOA. If you do not want to do a
delegation, you can create the a child zone called aaa, then a child under
that, and give it the IP of the webserver. Or you can create a delegation
for www under aaa giving it the their SOA info.
