After recently inquiring about connecting 2 Win98 desktop pc's using the USB
ports, I just discovered that there's already a built-in utility to connect
2 computers with the parallel port. Cool. $10 for a cable and I'm in like
Flynn I figure. Not so fast there Buckaroo Bonzai........
I've gone through the setup process as per the instructions in the help
files. After labeling a folder for sharing on the Host computer, I get as
far as the point where you instruct the Host computer to listen and the
Guest computer to connect.
At this point, the guest computer brings up a message "user name and
password verified", then "Connected via parallel cable on LPT1" but then
get a window stating "Direct Cable Connection was unable to display the
shared folders of the host computer. To see the shared folders, type in the
name of the host computer."
Per instructions in the help file, on the host computer I go to the network
icon in Control Panel under the "identification" tab and type what's there
and hit enter. Then "looking for shared folders" appears in the same
"Connected via parallel cable on LPT1" window. However, then a smaller
window pops up saying "cannot find host computer", which seems
contradictory to the "Connected via parallel cable on LPT1" message. I can
hear little drive noises on the host that coincide with these activities, so
something must be happening. But so far have not been able to get into the
files on the host computer.
Again, to recap the computers are:
Host - Compaq Deskpro 2000 Pent I 150mhz, Win98 2 h/d's
Guest - IBM PIII 550mhz, Win98SE, 2 h/d's
I appreciate any input
