Problems with Default Account

I'm running Windows XP Pro on my laptop and created my account as
John. I then installed various software and customised the account to
how I wanted it. Everything was fine for a couple of weeks. However,
suddenly, despite logging on as John, I get the default account
settings so the desktop does not contain the icons I placed there
originally and the Start bar does not have the Show Desktop icon any
more.

How can I ensure that I get the John settings when I log on and how
can I set them as default? As it stands, I have to replace the icons
on the Desktop when I log on.

John, this usually happens when there is trouble on the user account. You
could try logging onto it in Safe Mode and adjust any new additions to
startup. Disable them to see if they are stopping a normal log on.

The other cause is registry corruption for that account. Windows can't load
the corrupt registry so it logs you on with a temporary account. Because
the account is temporary it is missing all of your "stuff." The idea here
is not to copy things to the temporary account. Instead create a new
account.
