Problems with CD-RW

Hello, I am new to Windows XP and to this newsgroup. I am using Windows XP
Professional SP 2 at home. I am using K-Hypermedia CD-Rewriter. Windows XP
has problems detecting my CD-RW drive sometimes. As a result, sometimes
Windows XP would detect that a music cd is in the drive when there is nothing
inside the drive at all. The auto-play window would keep popping up from time
to time taking up valuable resources. Even when I close the auto-play window,
it would pop up again later. Sometimes, the CD-RW drive would just disappear
from My Computer. Other times, there would be more than one CR-RW drive
detected even though I only have one drive. Rebooting the PC usually solves
the problem. But I am wondering if there is a permanent solution to this
problem.

I would really appreciate any input. If this problem had been addressed
before, kindly point me to the previous post or faq article. I tried
searching for the solution through faqs and posts but there are just so many
posts and articles out there and it can be quite daunting for a newcomer.
Thanks.

In the first instance, I would suspect a hardware problem. Issues like this
can be a sign of a fault with the drive itself, obviously, the cable that
connects between the drive and the motherboard, or (rather less likely) the
components on the motherboard that make up the drive controller. I'd suggest
the first things to do would be to temporarily replace connector cable and
drive and see if the problem goes away.

If you're not comfortable working on computer hardware, and/or you don't
have a spare drive (even "just" a CD-Rom reader would be fine to test this)
laying around then go to a "proper" local computer repair shop and tell them
what you've told us.
