Hi I am using office 2007 and on one of the pages I have the following
where * is the bullet

* Main statement 1
- sub idea 1
- sub idea 2
When I try to add a second main statement like this
*Main statement2

it shows up as
-Main statement2 like it is still one of the sub categories under main
statement 1.

Thanks.

At the beginning of that line, press Shift+Tab. Or use the indent /
un-indent icons on the Home tab | Paragraph chunk.

thanks for the response. That seemed to work but have another minor issue.
When I try to add a sub bullet it adds it as
* sub idea two
where * is the bullet but on my sub bullets I want a horizonal line in front
of the sub bullet. I am modifying a powerpoint file that someone else
created so already has some bullet stuff on it.

Well, then you'll need to add the appropriate bullet to that indented line.
Or copy one of the others and paste it into place then indent it.

Why not type them all as 2nd level (with the dash as the sub-bullet) and
then move the ones you need to move to 1st level bullets?

Better yet, use your placeholders -- and teach the original author to do so
also -- instead of doing this manually line-by-line in a manual, ad hoc
textbox (which is designed for small bits of text, not levels and levels of
bulleted text).

Placeholders are the boxes that say "click to add text" that appear when you
select a title + text slide layout in Format | Slide Layout. You can apply
bullets to the placeholder by going to View | Master | Slide Master.
Thereafter, all your title + text slides will use those bullets you
specified on the master. Makes life *much* easier.
