Hi:
I've been creating auto run presentations using PPViewer 97, and all has been working ok until this
week. I installed Norton Internet Security, then after this, the presentation CD's that I created
don't start automatically. Are there any known discrepancies OR is there something or somewhere I
could look to see if a setting was changed (either by NIS or otherwise)? Please advise. I have taken
CD's that ran on my system before and they don't auto-start anymore. HELP!

hi mark,

it sounds very much as though you have answered the
question yourself. as you say if the cd's you have created
before worked but don't now following the installation of
norton internet security, then it is obviously blocking
the autorun.inf and other associated files.

i would recommend looking at norton

there is a known discrepency with Notrton Antivirus, you
can read about that here

so i imagine the problem is very similar.

i hope this has been of some help mark.

What version of Windows do you have? Norton probably has turned the autorun
notification for you, but you can reset it. The steps vary depending on the
version of Windows. Also, if you right click on the CD in Windows Explorer,
you should see "Autoplay". Selecting that will cause the CD to autorun, but
you need to do it each time.

Thanks, Scott. I tried their solution (keep doing live updates until there aren't any more) but it
didn't help. I am using a US version of PPT 97 on a German Windows XP computer. Perhaps I fall
through the cracks of their patch.

For me, the longer term question is how to make an auto run CD to use as a promotional tool. I mean,
NIS is a popular program these days, and if it locks out the autorun script, then there really isn't
a solution, or is there?

Hi Sonia:
A German version of XP. I tried your solution above, but Autoplay is a tab on a menu, and gives
autoplay options for several types of media. Since my presentation CD is mixed media, I selected
that, but it still didn't autostart. These CD's are sent out as a promotional tool for my business.
Since it seems as though NIS2004 locks out the autorun script, and since NIS2004 is such a popular
program, this CD might be the wrong approach, if it doesn't start automatically, giving a list of
instructions on how to run it from the Run menu under Start is just too many instructions. Or, is
there a better solution?

No, I think you misunderstood me. Don't right click and select Properties.
That has to do with how you want non-autorun CDs to run based on their
content. For example, music CD's can run automatically, even though they
don't contain an autorun.inf file. Your CD is a "data" CD and that menu
won't help you.

For your CD, just open Windows Explorer, locate the CD and right click on
it. In the pop up menu you should see the word "Autoplay" listed.
Selecting it will cause your CD to autorun. Normally Windows XP should see
the autorun.inf file and autorun your CD when it is inserted. However, if
the Registry has been modified, Windows will ignore the autorun.inf file.

To check your system and fix it so that it will run the CD automatically,
for Windows XP you need to check the Registry. Go to Start > Run and type
regedit and click OK. Then locate the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
To the right you should see a list. Locate "Autorun" in the list. In the
Data column if you see 0x00000001 (1) it means that your CD drives are set
to autorun. If you see 0x00000000 (0) instead, you need to right click on
the word Autorun and select "Modify" and change the value to 1.

Let us know if that works.
