Hey,

ich got a RAID-0 stripping with two 160gb Maxtor Drives.
now i got the problem that windows xp freezes from time to time, and after
such a freeze the via raid bios hangs, and doesn't find the drives.
i think the error message is something like this: 'failed to initiate hard
drives -
pls check disks. bios does not be loaded.'

what could be the problem here? may the hard drives get too hot? i already
measured the temp on the surface of the chip on the buttoon of the dirve - i
get
over 50 degrees celcius there - i that still ok - normal?

i would be really happy if i could get behind that wierd problem. it's a new
comp
so i am already thinking about complaining at the vendor.

thx for any help
greets

50C ? That is hot. Arrange some extra cooling for your computer.
For example, I removed a plastic piece from the front of my Sonata
computer case, and this reduces the resistance to air flow for
the case. The air temperature inside the case dropped by 6C as
more air can move through the case. You can also try removing the
cover plates in front of the disk drives, so that cool external
air will be drawn over the disk drives, which will reduce the
temperatures a lot. A disk drive that is bathed in the hot air
from the CPU is going to get hot, so you need to ensure the disk
drives only receive fresh air, and not any recirculated air from
inside the computer case.

HTH,
Paul

meanwhile i assume it's something else.
i also got craches right after starting the computer - and somethimes
i can use it for hours without any problem.

i really don't know what i could try now.
any help appreciated =/

Get a copy of memtest86 from memtest.org
The program contains a floppy formatter, and will prepare
a blank floppy with the necessary test code. Then, you
use the floppy to boot the computer and test the memory.

If that test passes without any errors, the next test
can be done while booted in Windows. Get a copy of
Prime95 from mersenne.org . This is a Windows program
that has an option called "Torture Test". The torture
test does FFT calculations, and verifies the results,
and it test both the quality of your RAM and the
correctness of the CPU.

I am willing to bet that your computer will fail one
of those tests. If it fails the first test, try some
other memory. If it passes the first test and fails
the second, it could be either the memory or the CPU
which is at fault.

Hope that helps,
Paul
