problems with a backend

We are using an Access2000 front end and backend. The frontends resid
on PC's, the backend on a university server.
The system had been running successfully for several months.
Since a few days, it has intermittently started to write garbage (asci
codes) into the fields of a main table, while the real field value
never get there. Can anyone help or have you seen this before?

Yes, this is a sign of corruption. When I saw this happening at a
client myself it was due to flaky power in an older building with an
over stressed electrical system. The network hub was not on a UPS.

However many other things could cause this problem. I'd first ask
your IT department if anything has changed on the server such as new
SP or whatever. Also are there any new computers on the FEs.

Thanks Tony, we're on it. Your site is interesting & helpful, will link
it on mine.
The other thing I'm thinking is virus. Have you seen viruses attached
to the access environment or even to access objects? By nature it would
be very difficult to detect virus code inside an application?

I vaguely recall reading of one Access based virus out there but
that's been it. There are too few copies of Access running on home
users systems to make these a popular means of sending them out.
