Are there any known problems with Windows XP on computers with 2 gigabytes
of memory?

With 2GB installed, the Retrospect backup program would always report
compare errors ( = corrupted backup file) and would frequently crash. When
I removed half the memory, these problems did not occur.

I doubt it has anything to do with the operating system. Depending on the
chipset and the type of RAM used, it may be hardware related. With 2GB of
RAM installed, try running Memtest v3 from www.memtest86.com

This is most likely to be caused by either the module you removed being
faulty, or the two modules not being exactly matched
