Problems using style drop down list

I am using Word97 and recently I'm experiencing a problem
when trying to change a paragraph style by using the style
drop down list on the tool bar.
Let's say I have a regular paragraph and I want to change
it into a bullet, I cannot use the "style drop down list".
Whenever I try, Word is not responding and I have to end
the program and re-open Word.
What could be causing the problem?

Something's broken... Does this happen with any style, or
only with ones that apply bullets or numbering? Do you get
the same problem if you try to use Format/Bullets and
Numbering?

Search your hard-drive for the Normal.dot template. Rename it
to NormalOLD.dot. Now start up Word. Has the problem gone
away if you test in a new document?

Thank you for help ... as it turns out the problem was
with a particular document. We were able to fix it by
saving the document in RTF format and then reopenning it
in Word. All appears to be OK.
