Problems transferring things from my machine

Hey all,

Between October 28th and now something has gone wrong with my machine. I
tried today to upload an image to my blog using a web based form (click
browse, click upload) and no matter what I did, the image wouldn't upload
correctly (even though it can be viewed correctly on my machine). It says it
has but when the image is viewed it's all screwed up.

I thought this was weird so I went to my Yahoo account and tried to send an
attachment to another e-mail account I have. This didn't work either. The
attachment is uploaded but when it is recieved it doesn't work (be the
attachment a picture, word document etc.) I say October because if you go to
my blog (www.gledster2000.co.uk) the last time I was able to upload a
photograph was late October. It worked then.

I do have Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus on my machine but it can't be
them (well I don't think so) because I've had them since July and not had
this problem before! I have used WindowsUpdate a few times since October so
it might be something in an update - has anyone heard anything?

To re-iterate my problem - things uploaded to the net (like a word doc
attached to a web-based e-mail account e-mail) seems to get scrambled during
upload. This happens in IE6 (6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633; updates: SP1;
Q822925; Q330994; Q828750; Q824145) and Opera 7.2 Build 3144 and using Yahoo
Messenger so it must be something on the machine that's causing it. Could it
be my ISP? Norton Internet software? My broadband (NTL cable) connection?
Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for any help you can give

Possibly you have downloaded some kind of malware via Yahoo! Messenger?

I assume that you have done a scan with your Norton AV and found nothing?
In which case, you should also scan for parasites with Spybot S&D. If you
don't have it, there's a short tutorial and download link here:
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/

After installing, press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and
install all updates.

Fix everything SpybotSD labels in red.

Reboot, and then test your system. If your problem isn't gone (or if you're
unsure)-

Download 'Hijack This!'. http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents. Most
of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything
yet.

Then go to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/

Just sign in, or post as a guest, and go to the Spyware and Hijackware
Removal Support section. Press "new topic", explain your problem, and
copy and paste the contents of the Hijack This log into your new message.

Thansk for the suggestions Robin, am trying them now. No I haven't yet done
a scan with Norton yet, am going to do that overnight (because it takes
AGES!) I don't think I've picked anything up via Messenger because I haven't
recieved any files via it for ages, and only people I know send me files
(and even then they tend to be pictures). Still I'll scan with Spybot S&D
anyways.

Just to re-iterate for anyone new to the thread - if I am uploading files
from my machine to somewhere else (my blog, as an attachment to a web-based
e-mail, Yahoo photos, transferring via Messenger) it seems to get trashed
during the upload. This happens on all the profiles on my machine. I'm
running IE6 and Opera and it happens on both. I have a Windows XP OS with
recent hotfixes and updates downloaded (my housemate does that even though
I've asked him to stop!) If anyone has any ideas how to get file uploads
working again I'd love to hear them!

Just posting to say that a scan with both Norton and Spybot turned up pretty
much zero. Spybot found some cookies and something left over from a
screensaver download ages ago but other than that nothing. This is really
annoying and I'd love it if anyone had any more suggestions!

Thanks
