Problems transferring MM File to another computer

I produced a MM project in my work computer (XP Pro) very satisfactorily and
saved it. Runs just fine in that PC.

I then copied the file to a USB jump drive and copied it to the HDD in my
laptop (XP Home).

When I try to open the file in MM, or launch it from Win Expl., it states
that it may not be a MM format, or is corrupted.

I plugged the device back into the work PC, and the file runs just fine -
even from the USB device.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is... or solution?

Cheers

there are project files and saved movies.... you may be mixing the two...
trying to open a movie when it's a project file, or play a movie when it's a
project file.

Just some thoughts...

Are both machines running the same
version of Movie Maker?

Is this a movie file...wmv or .avi? Or is it
a project file .mswmm? If it's a project
file...did you also import the source files?

If it's a project file....instead of opening
Movie Maker and trying to import the file...
did you try left clicking the file and see if
it would launch Movie Maker.

No, LT has XP home with MM ver 1.1.2427.0 and the PC has XP Pro with MM ver
2.1.4026.0 Should it really make that much difference?

This is a mswmm file.

Here's how I created it: I launched MM, imported video clips and photos,
constructed my movie, added titlles, then saved. Think I selected "save
project as". There is but one format option to use when saving - mswmm.

How does one make it other than a project file?

I tried launching the file from Windows Explorer - same results

Your very informative site helped. The fog is beginning to disappear... first
time using this software.

I am converting the project file to movie now. However, couldn't find the
AVI/WMV choice...? Just different qualities, and devices on which it would
play. I selected "highest quality" and assume it will be WMV...?

I looked at the options/folders in your site, but couldn't find anything
about transferring an actual project file so I can work on it on the LT. Is
itpossible to do that?

Or would I have to just import the newly created movie file and edit/add to
it that way?

LT: XP home w/MM ver 1.1.2427.0 - PC: XP Pro w/MM ver 2.1.2946.0 do I need
to upgrade the version in the LT?

Thanks for the assistance

you would need the project file and all the source files used by it... and
you might have to put them into identical folders/subfolders on the other
computer.

It might make a difference...you are
running a different version of Windows
and a different version of Movie maker
on the home computer.

That file is useless on a computer that does
not have the source files. The program only
creates links to the actual source files and
when you move it to a different computer you
must also move the source files.

If you save in a movie format...wmv or .avi...
then you can play it on most any computer.

File / Save Movie File, this creates a .wmv
movie file. Or you can create an .avi movie
file if you use the following instructions.

How do I save my movie as a
DV-AVI file in Movie Maker?

I don't have version 1.1 so I cannot test it
but maybe it won't open a 2.1 file correctly.

You could upgrade your home computer to
versino 2.1 if you install WinXP SP2...or
you could download version 2.0 from the
following link.

MovieMaker 2.0
