I have a problem on a friends laptop that I need to fix and am hoping someone can help me.
The machine is running XP home SP2 and is connected to a cable modem via ethernet.
The problem is to do with an anti-virus and firewall program that was installed. This program is "Computer associates EZ-trust AV and Firewall"
We need to install a better AV software and when we uninstall EZ-trust the windows firewall wont start up no matter what we do. The network reports an error message 2035E (i think) authentication host error.
Is there a way to reinstall or repair the windows firewall so we can get it to start.

Im not so sure on what the "authentication host error." is, - maybe someone else can enlighten you on that or try searching on microsofts own web site... Have you tried using an alternative firewall, I wouldnt trust the default one by windows as it only monitors traffic in one direction.

If ya want free firewall use Zonealarm or Sygate.

This might be a bad one. I read another forum pages long about the same problem still not fixed.
It could be a highjack spyware or trojan that take over firewalls and wont let ya unistall it the way its setup or its a **** program.
Backup your registry before trying this. These work good for getting rid of McaFee.

You might try Highjack This

You might try a intallin third party unistaller then reinstall the AV firewall and using the uninstaller.

If Ya have problems turn off firewall running in the background using Msconfig.
Try Startup inspector for windows

If ya get it off then use CCleaner to Cleanup software issues.
