I have a 2 computer both running XP Pro. They both connect to the internet
via a router and a DSL modem. I'd also like to view/amend files on the
desktop from the laptop. Both machines are setup to use a workgroup but when
trying to map a drive I can't see the other machine.
I can ping the desktop from the laptop and both machines can get to the web
ok.

Any ideas?

Do you have the XP firewall enabled on either machine? If so, turn it off
and see if that helps. If it does, you may need to replace the firewall
with a more configurable 3rd party product.

Had similar problem disabled XP firewall did a couple of other changes and
all is fine Norton firewall needs to be configed witht the machine IP
addresses also on our desktop it has put an IP address for the nic card in
as well. I used the wizard to do the findings and it worked.
