when i play any games on my gateway with xp they will run for about 5 minutes and then the window will minimize. this just started happening and i am not sure what to do. it uses nvidia geforce fx 5200 as the cideo controller and a test on pc doctor says something about the memory having a fault.

What exactly does it say about the memory having a fault?

That sounds like a symptom of the video memory being reassigned to display
the desktop. Since this just started happening what software have you
installed recently on your system? Are you using any extra software for
your keyboard or mouse besides the in-box XP drivers?

i have not installed anything as of late, and i havent done anything to the computer since i got it other than install 3 games, all of which have been on there since the night i got it. Could it be virus related?

I doubt it's virus related, but make sure you are running a virus scanner
with the latest definitions (AVG www.grisoft.com - is a very good one and
it's free for personal use) and have all the latest updates from
www.windowsupdate.com.

It's certainly an odd error I've not come across it before. Perhaps a
hardware fault?

What games is it you're trying to run?

You could try system restore to restore your machine to a time before this
started happening. Even if it didn't work it would at least make it seem
like a software issue was the cause.

If your worried about virus you might also try looking for spyware. Try
spybot or ad-aware. I wsa thinking maybe some other software might be
trying to steal focus away from the game.

I seem to recall encountering a similar problem. If I remember correctly, I discovered that what was happening was another program was cutting in forcing my game to minimize. This could happen with things like Virus scanners, Firewalls, Messenger programs, timed events etc. If the program is trying to pop up a dialog box, then it will steal focus from your game, forcing your game to minimize. You will then need to close the dialog, and maximize the game again. I would suggest before playing the game, shut down everything else you have running. If the game continues to cause problems, then it may be a deeper issue.

Hope that helps.
Eggman.
