every time I try to use DiskScan to check my HD for problems it tells me I
cannot check it because the disk is in use by the system.....
and when I try to use the Check on next restart it dose check but only with
CHKDSK and not with DISKSCAN......
How can I get diskscan to work while the system is running so that disk scan
will be used and not checkdisk which dose not do a good job of repairing
problems?

Well Wes
It comes up when you use the My computer and then click on properties
then tools.
Well its error Checking anyway.......
The Errors and Freezes that happen to me seem to occur just like
they did when I had my old copy of Win 98SE........ could this be
incompatible Hardware?
Or a Stumbling block put in by windows again for unregistered copies??
If so I HAVE REGISTERED AND HAVE BOUGHT A FREAKING COPY!!!!!!
Wish BILL would get a LIFE now that I have PAID FOR THE SOFTWARE!!!!!!
The only Obvious problem I see is my Irez Icamm I have a Driver for it
that windows XP Home says is not certified..... and MS online tells me that
this is because this Driver was not tested for XP Home PS1 2002
Will the compatibility Wizard pick up this Driver or any other peace of
software and switch XP home to a Compatibility mode for that peace of
software?
or has this to be done manually?

Justin;

Scandisk is now Error-checking (chkdsk.exe).
Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive | Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options |
Check both.
Automatically fix file system errors
[[Specifies whether Windows repairs file-system errors found during disk
checking. All files must be closed for this program to run. If the drive is
currently in use, a message asks if you want to reschedule the disk checking
for the next time you restart your computer. Your drive is not available to
run other tasks while the disk is being checked.]]
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
[[Specifies whether Windows repairs file-system errors found during disk
checking, locates bad sectors, and recovers readable information. All files
must be closed for this program to run. If the drive is currently in use, a
message asks if you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time
you restart your computer. Your drive is not available to run other tasks
while the disk is being checked.
If you select this option, you do not need to select Automatically fix file
system errors. Windows fixes any errors on the disk.]]

You *have* to reboot for Error-checking to run.

For a peek at the log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
Look in Application | Listed as Information
under Winlogon, Event 1001

Unsigned drivers are not necessarily a problem. Some companies have
not bothered with the procedure. The driver for your Irez Icamm should be
for XP, check their web site for XP drivers. The Program Compatibility
Wizard isn't for drivers. You can use the Wizard or set things manually.

Yes you could have hardware that is not compatible. Did you run the Upgrade
Advisor??

[[The Upgrade Advisor is a tool that checks your system hardware and
software to see if it is ready for upgrade to Windows XP. If you run Upgrade
Advisor while you are connected to the Internet, and if your system needs
updates that are available on the Windows Update Web site, Upgrade Advisor
will find and install the updates for you.]]

Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME had ScanDisk.

The OP was using Win 98SE, where ScanDisk was used.
So, yes ScanDisk is now Error Checking (chkdsk.exe), if you
moved from one of those OSs to XP.

No, chkdsk is nowhere near the same as scandisk. It may occupy the
same space in the right click menu, but they are too distinctly
different programs that operate in radically differnt modes and
methods.

No NT-based OS has ever used Scandisk. Better to say that scandisk
has been retired and chkdsk is the only option now. It did NOT
"replace" scandisk as scandisk NEVER existed in NT.

However, chkdsk did exist in win98, just not the same chkdsk that is
in the NT family.
