I recently attempted to reformat the hard drive on a
Compaq Presario 7000, which was upgraded from Windows 98
to Windows XP about a year ago. I first tried to do it
by using the Upgrade disk to perform a new installation,
but it never gave me the option of deleting the old
partion. I went through with the installation and now
have very little hard drive space left. Then, I tried to
boot from a full install disk and delete the partitions
in this manner, but it still didn't give me the option to
delete the partitions. I've heard of fdisk, but have no
idea how to implement this. If this is a viable
solution, how can I use it? If not, what options are
there, short of buying a new hard drive, of easily wiping
my hard drive clean and installing a fresh load of
Windows?

If you can, search for killdisk on Google. This a low
level format utility that is not brand specific. The
file is small enough that after it is downloaded and
unzipped can be copied and pasted onto a Windows 98
startup disk. Boot using the startup disk and when you
get the A:/ prompt, type in killdisk.exe and follow the
prompts to erase your drive. When you need to type in
killdisk, make sure it is in CAPS
