Problems recording in stereo

When recording in stereo mode through the line-in jack,
only the left channel gets recorded. I've tried this with
two different sound cards, various recording
applications, various input devices and several stereo
leads. I can only assume that there's a system setting or
registry entry somewhere that needs changing, but I can't
find it. Anyone else experienced this?

Advanced Audio Properties in ControlPanel/Sounds has

settings for stereo speakers. Most PC speakers plugs are
for left and right speaker control.

Thanks, but it's not the speakers I have a problem with.

Playback of stereo recordings is fine. It's recording via
the line-in socket that only records one channel.
