Problems opening Excel and Word files

Last Saturday evening I was working with Excel and Word (both 2002 version) files. All of a sudden, I could no longer open any files in either program. After spending a few hours trying to determine the error, I restored the computer to the prior day's date. This fixed the problem (temporarily). Now it seems that about the same time every evening, the same thing happens. Once I restore the computer to last Friday's date, Excel and Word work fine until the next evening.
 
In Excel I get the message: Unable to read file. In Word I get the message: The file " " is not available (the file name I was trying to open is in the quotation marks).
 
I disabled the Office Plugin. That stopped the problem with Excel and Word, but seems to have created a problem with Norton Anitivirus and Norton Internet Security. Now every evening about the same time I had the Word and Excel problem they have problems. I get the messages: "Norton Antivirus has encountered an internal program error. Please uninstall and reinstall Norton Antivirus." and "Norton Internet Security has detected a program error. Uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security to protect your computer."

All these problems (Word & Excell) seem to have started when I renewed my subscription to Norton Internet Security.
