Problems opening attachments (*.wav & *.tif)

Steve Hill

Some of my users have issues attempting to open attachments that are sent
from our voice mail and FAX servers.

Apparrently, the temp file folder retains the "read-only" attribute after
the attachment is closed, which hampers the folder being used for the
opening of the next (or even the same) attachment.

Any ideas?

it should open new copies and add a number to the file - up to 99.

to view and clean the folder:
see http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2003/20030828.htm

also, tell the users to close the attachment before viewing other email or
folders - then the original should be removed when the message is closed or
no longer in preview.

I've already done some research on this in the past, and had previously
discovered the registry entry for changing the location of the temp folder.

We have approximately 30 users who use outlook on a daily basis. This
problem first affected two users at about the same time, and then seemed to
remedy itself. Now it's affecting one of the original users again, and two
new ones.

At first, I discovered that the users were clicking on the attachment icon
in the preview pane to open the *.wav file voice mail. It would open and
play the first time, following a restart of Outlook, but then fail with a
"file folder permission error" on subsequent attempts.

I found that I could manually remove the read-only attribute on the temp
folder, but it would lock itself each time the attachment was opened.

Now the problem is affecting one of our key users in a remote location, and
I haven't found a good solution to permanently fix it.

I have instructed the users to fully open the e-mail, then open the
attachment, rather than only using the preview pane.

Wht puzzles me is that the problem is inconsistent among the users. I have
tried to standardize our workstation loads and configurations, but the users
do have some leeway, due to the nature of our business.

This problem is rather perplexing...
