Hi all,

I'm really a beginner with networking so please be gentle! :)

My intention is to network my WinXP PC with my Win2000 laptop. I have a
Xircom PCMCIA creditcard ethernet adapter but have had no luck installing
it. I follow the instructions exactly but Win2000 just won't automatically
detect the card at all. Still no joy even if I go ahead and install the
drivers from the CD.

I tried the card on two laptops and presumed it dead, so recieved a
replacement, however so far in the laptop I want to use, still no joy!

The PCMCIA slot controllers appear to be active, although one says "Generic
driver" and the other says something about an "O/2 driver".

Does the problem lie with the card, the O/S or the PCMCIA controller?

This is the first time I've had anything to do with PCMCIA so I'm not sure
what to look for if I need another driver. The laptop was put together by
Time Computers but there doesn't appear to be a model number... and Time
computers are now Tiny computers I think?

Any advice would be great. I can't afford to set up a wireless network yet
so it would be nice to have this working!

TIA

Gem.

First question is, is the second card been tested on another machine since
being placed in the Laptop, as it may have been damaged by a faulty card
slot on the Laptop, And is the PCMCIA slot activated on the Laptop (look in
the BIOS)

If it is ok then try removing the reference to the card in Device Manager
and rebooting with the card in place, Win2K should detect the card as new
Hardware and ask for the drivers, Look in DM for anything with a yellow
exclamation mark if there is remove it.

Are the drivers correct? 2K wont load a device if it can't find the driver,
or if the drivers are for anothere OS, and is the card designed for use in
2K ?

I will try the card in my other laptop when I have it's power cable back
this week.
I checked the laptop's bios but found no mention of the PCMCIA slot
anywhere..! :(

Drivers should be correct yep.
