Problems Installing W2kserver

I'm attempting to install Windows 2000 Server on an HP Pavilion 9870 with
1GB of RAMBUS RAM. Even taking pretty much the defaults, the install dies
at the end of final setup and either locks the PC or reboots it, causing
setup to restart.

Anyone got any ideas? Please CC me directly at the address in the sig.

Hi John,

Charles states that it's probably a hardware issue and I have to agree.
Anytime you cannot make it through a default installation, we want to look
at the hardware.

Some other things you might want to look at:
1. Can you do a shift F10, where it appears to hang? If so the machine is
truely not hung. You can look at the SETUPAPI.LOG for potential errors.
2. Test your memory with the the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostics -
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
3. Make sure your loading the correct mass storage device drivers and that
all firmware / bios levels on your machine are up to the latest releases.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I don't respond by email - the newsgroups are a place for everyone to
learn/benefit.

Try removing any/all of the hardware you can, to do a bare install. This
might also include changing CD ROM drives

I mistyped when I said that it hangs. Actually what happens is either it
will crash with a blue-screen error at "finalizing settings" or reboot
spontaneously at "saving settings." As for the mass-storage drivers, this
is an all-IDE system, and I'm just using the detected hardware defaults. I
will try the memory tester, providing that it can run from a floppy, as
there is no O/S on this system at all.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already yanked all the cards and
replaced the video with a generic S3 Trio64. That didn't help. The only
thing left to try, I guess, would be a different CDROM and/or hard drive.
That would tell me for sure if it was the motherboard/chipset or not.
Matter of fact, I guess I *could* try that... I have a spare IDE CDROM
lying around.

Thanks...

John,

What's your stop code from the blue screen?

The memory tester will run from a floppy.
