Problems installing PSC 1210 drivers

How do I install only the drivers (not the software) for the PSC 1210?
I have the disk but I think something's not working right.

I tried adding it going through the printer wizard and using the "have
disk" option but it said, "the specified location does not contain
information about your hardware". So then I connected the PSC to the
computer with the USB cable which opened the "add hardware wizard". I
had it search for the files on the disk, it appeared to copy and
install the files to the system32 folder.

The psc is not showing up under printers. It is showing up under
scanners and cameras. But when I select properties, it says they're
not available. I haven't had an opportunity to test whether it will
scan.

How do I get it to print?

I unplugged the USB cable and plugged it in again and now the printer
works. Go figure! But I cannot get the scanner to work at all. I was
hoping I could get it to work without installing HP's bloated
software. I thought Windows XP had a scanner function built in that
could be used but if so, that's not working either. Is there a way to
get the scanner to work without installing HP's software? The scanner
is giving me this error message, "The computer cannot detect the
scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and and
properly connected to the computer".

So you expect to buy a company's hardware and refuse to use the
software designed to get the most out of it? What's wrong with this
picture? Sometimes you can use generic programs and limp by, but why
bother?
I suggest you install the minimum software provided and make sure
everything works. Then you can temporarily disable the pieces you
don't think you need as a prelude to removing them. You might not want
the CD Memories software, for example. I have not found much savings
in this approach myself.
Since your computer is finding the scanner, you might be able to run
it from an imaging program such as Irfanview. You might need to
install new Twain drivers though.

I didn't buy this printer/scanner, I got it used from a relative who
wanted to upgrade. I've been told there is no minimal software
installation, you have to install the whole thing, which is BLOATED.
It's also been known to cause problems for some computers. I'd rather
not install it, especially since I'm short on disk space.
