Hi Folks

I'm trying to import my old Outlook 2000 .PST (w/ all my E-mail, Contacts, etc.) into Outlook 2002. But when I tried to "Import" my .PST that I created in Outlook 2000 into Outlook 2002, it gave me an error saying

"The file backup.pst is not a personal folders file.

And it kicks me out. :

I have already copied this file onto my hard drive from my CD and made sure that it was NOT "Read Only.

Any thoughts as to why this is happening

Thanks for any help! I need my old Contacts and E-mail.

Try running scanpst.exe against the file and see if it comes up with
anything

Try running the "scanpst.exe" file on the pst file to possibly repair.

Hi CG, Roady

Thanks. I just tried running "scanpst.exe" and..

It found 2 errors. It repaired them. BUT, when I went to export in the repaired .pst now, it reads it fine... except all it finds in there is my Trash Can from the previous Outlook backup! :( There are no other folders or items in the "repaired" backup.pst

Ugh. Is there anything else I can do

Thanks

Do you still got the original one? See if you can open it by using File->
Open-> Outlook Data File...
If this doesn't help make a new copy from CD to HD. It is a bit of a
longshot as I hink your pst-file is damaged beyond repair.

If possible (another long shot) but try importing to another outlook on a
different computer or make a new profile in outlook and try it there.

Hi

Tried that just now, doesn't work! :

So, all the Outlook MVPs here... clearly seeing the multiple posts by Don, myself and many others, there is SOMETHING wrong with importing in Microsoft OUTLOOK .PST files from one version to another

Look at how many instances there are of this. Is there anything that you MVPs or anyone from Microsoft browsing these boards can do? (Notify Microsoft Tech Support to look into this? Patch it?

Thanks for anything that can help future people from suffering from this huge loss~! :

I've just lost 3 Years worth of Contacts and all my important business client e-mails as well! This is BAD..

Hi CG

Just tried that as well, no go! :

In fact, I just used a PC with Outlook 2000 on there (same version I exported from), and it gave me the same error (that "backup.pst" is not a personal folders file."

I run Scanpst.exe and it finds the same thing (2 errors) and repairs it. But again, just an empty folder and trash can! :

Note that the actual .PST that's on CD and copied to Hard Drive is 100 MEGS in size, so SOMETHING was in there and preserved (sorta). :

I'm thinking this might be an inherent, recurring problem with MS Outlook creating the .PST files as backup. In the actual creation process of it

I just spoke with a good colleague of mine, and he just chimed in saying that he upgraded to Outlook 2003 and he ALSO can't open up his .PST file from Outlook 2000! :

This is potentially a HUGE bug that needs to be looked at... Microsoft MVPs? Any reporting back to Microsoft

Thanks

One last "angle" I can think of (and a Plea to anyone who knows)

* Are there any other Utilities/Tools that can repair a .PST (Outlook Personal Folders File), besides "scanpst.exe"

That utility doesn't really help restore anything, and I have 3 Years worth of Contacts and Mail on the line

Thanks in advance for any additional help on this!

Thanks, Sue

Have you (or anyone else) tried those other solutions (in the link below)? They seem to charge at least $90+ (US) for any of their repair tool packages. Are they a gimmick? Reliable

Thanks for any help

Yes, there are some other tools/services that claim to do PST repair -- see http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.ht

I have no information from actual users of these services. Caveat emptor.

Hello Ken and everyone

I am in exactly the same situation and have tried everything that was suggested on MS Office Discussion Group plus online search. I have effectively lost 4 years of my life if no one can find a fix or solution to this problem.

Did you try within OL, File/Open/Personal Folders..........browse to pst?
Its a bit difficult to follow the thread as you created a new post
